While Working As A Restaurant Hostess, She Was Forced To Go Back And Forth With An Infuriating Customer Who Wanted To Be Seated A Half Hour Before The Restaurant Even Opened

So many people tell stories about all the awful customers they have to deal with when they’re servers in restaurants. While servers do tend to get the brunt of bad customer abuse, hosts also have to deal with it.
One TikTok creator recently went viral after re-enacting an infuriating phone call she had with a customer when she was a hostess.
Sydney (@insydemymind) re-enacted a phone call she had with a customer during a hostess job she had when she was 17, who seemed to not understand the concept of time.
Sydney received a call from a customer whom she referred to as Karen. Karen stood outside the restaurant at 8:30 am, wondering why the doors were locked. Sydney calmly told her it was 8:30 am, and the restaurant did not open until 9:00 am.
The customer then went through a whole rigmarole to accuse Sydney of lying, claiming the restaurant had to be open because it was full of people. Sydney explained that the people in the restaurant were all servers and other staff getting ready to open for the day.
The customer became angrier and began demanding that Sydney let her in. When Sydney explained she couldn’t do that because there was still half an hour left until opening, the customer did not let up.
Sydney asked Karen if she had a reservation, and she said yes, that she had one for 8:30.
“We don’t take reservations until 9:00 am because that’s when we open,” says Sydney.
“I definitely made a reservation for 8:30; I even have an email confirmation on my phone that I can show you if you let me in,” replies Karen, the customer.

Sydney and Karen continued going back and forth as Sydney tried explaining to her that neither the staff nor the food would be ready for serving until 9:00 am when the restaurant opened. Then, Sydney discovered that Karen had a reservation for 8:30 pm, not 8:30 am.
Finally, Karen told Sydney, “It doesn’t look busy in there at all, so if you let me in, I’ll be out before anyone else gets here,” indicating that she refused to show any form of common sense or human decency.
That’s when Sydney ends her video by rolling her eyes and shaking her head. Clearly, re-enacting that rude customer interaction brought back some painful memories.
“I know this is just a skit, but if this really happened to someone, I sure hope they did not stay on the phone that long with that lady!” commented one TikTok user on Sydney’s video.
“I was 17 and a major people pleaser,” responded Sydney.
If you’ve worked in restaurants, have you ever dealt with a customer like that?
