The company says that each launch will cost a few thousand dollars. However, that price is relatively cheap compared to the amount of money that currently goes into space travel.
This would also be a much more sustainable method if it proves to be successful, as it does not require the use of fuel.
The whole process would be powered by solar energy. The Geostationary Orbit Station would essentially serve as a huge solar panel.
Initially, construction of the elevator was slated to start in 2025, but that start date has been pushed back.
The project comes with a few major setbacks, such as the fact that there isn’t enough steel on the planet to make a structure as enormous as the one Obayashi Corporation plans to create.
It is also estimated to take $100 billion to build, which poses an issue. Still, the Obayashi Corporation are maintaining a positive attitude that the space elevator will come to fruition one day.
