Now that we are smack dab in the middle of the summer season, I’m sure many of you have already planned or have been going on beach trips.

I mean, who doesn’t love a day at the beach in the summer? The sun is out, you get an opportunity to relax, and whenever you want, you can take a refreshing dip in the ocean.

As a girl who grew up only about an hour from the Jersey shore, I have been lucky enough to go to the beach many, many times.

While I never had a beach house, I have friends who do, so I’ve also tagged along on many weekend getaways dedicated to being on the beach.

Because of my experience, you can consider me a bit of a beach enthusiast, and I’ve learned a lot about the best things to take on the beach.

If you have a beach vacation coming up, are in need of a beach day, or are about to go for the first time in years, here are some of my beach bag essentials for taking on the beach.

A good-quality beach chair

While this may not be a “beach bag” item and may seem obvious to bring to the beach, I had to remind you to pack one. Having a nice beach chair that’s comfortable and fairly easy to get out of brings your beach day to the next level.

I always hate going to the beach with only a towel to sit on, as it often gets covered in sand and uncomfortable really fast.

Two towels

I am a firm believer in packing two towels for the beach. While you’ll have to do a bit more laundry, you need one towel designated for drying yourself off after getting wet in the ocean and another designated for laying out in the sand or covering yourself up.

I’ve always hated using my towel to dry myself off and then laying on a damp towel in the sand a few moments later. It’s also nice to have a spare if the sun gets too intense and you want to use it as a protective blanket.

Your own sunscreen and lip balm

When you’re at someone’s beach house, they’ll often have a communal collection of sunscreens. The same goes if you’re taking a beach trip with a group.

My advice is: bring your own. I have very pale skin and require a whole lot of sunscreen, so I can’t risk relying on someone else’s half-empty supply. Bring your own, share if you want to, and don’t forget to reapply. The same goes for moisturizing lip balm!

A hairbrush, detangling spray, and hair ties

I don’t know about you, but my hair doesn’t become luscious and curly when I get out of the ocean like some people’s. It gets knotty and very annoying, so I always pack a hairbrush, a detangling spray or leave-in conditioner, and hair ties to maintain my hair after getting out of the ocean.

Trust me, if you have long, tangle-prone hair, these items will be your lifesaver on the beach. Even if you don’t end up swimming, it’s nice to have a brush and hair tie handy if the wind blows your hair in your face.

A charged Bluetooth speaker and prepared playlist

The night before hitting the beach, be sure to charge your portable Bluetooth speaker! Few things are more annoying than vibing to music on the beach and having your speaker die.

Two sandwiches, light snacks, and a full tumbler

TikTok creator Zachariah (@zzzachariah) made a video about bringing two sandwiches to the beach instead of one, as once you get to the beach, you may be too focused on your first sandwich and eat it too quickly. I completely agree with him, as it’s best to have a spare for when lunchtime actually rolls around.

Pair your sandwiches with light snacks that can easily fit in Ziplock bags, and fill up a cooling tumbler with your beverage of choice. Save yourself from hauling a cooler and just load up your all-day cooling tumbler cup with your favorite adult or plain beverage.

There you have it, some of my beach bag essentials! While they may seem basic, they can easily take a beach day and make it a relaxing and fun one.
