While there, they were informed that it wouldn’t be possible to get DNA the way they had intended, as Roberto had passed away in 2005 in a plane crash.

Not willing to let this hurdle stop them, authorities worked to exhume Roberto’s remains and gather DNA that way.

In the later part of 2020 and early months of 2021 that followed, Roberto’s grave was cracked open and his DNA was found to be a match to the suspect in Kimberly, Sia, and Jessica’s murders.

“Detectives believe Fernandes is a serial killer, and they fear that part of this tragic story may sadly still be unwritten,” the Broward Sheriff’s Office continued.

Authorities strongly believe that Roberto has other murder victims across the United States.
