She Was Accused Of Being Entitled Over The Career Advice She Gave Her Niece

She replied, “She honestly had a lot of really insightful questions and I could tell she understood what we were talking about a lot more than he seems to.”

When Jeff asked her why she had told Mia to focus more on building social skills than knowledge in her field, she rephrased the advice but stuck to her what she said.

She wrote, “If I could go back in time and tell my college self anything, it would be to have less of a focus on my studies, and more of a focus on networking, soft skills, and ‘street smarts’ to look out for my self in a male-dominated career.”

She also added that the tech field is full of capable workers, but social skills could put her ahead of her peers.

Reddit users responded well to the post and primarily sided with the writer on her stance. One even wrote that they were “saving this post for when I graduate in May.”

Another commenter felt that perhaps there had been a miscommunication somewhere along the way but that the advice itself was important.

“Sounds like your niece interpreted some of your advice the wrong way, but a lot of what you said was sound. In many fields, who you know will help you get started much faster than what you know.”
