“I asked her not to share anything uncomfortable there, and when she asked what I meant, I told her that acting kind of shameless about stuff that most people find shameful is awkward,” he explained.
Still, his girlfriend did not understand. She claimed that her past is not shameful– and that she is proud of getting through her struggles and self-hatred.
Moreover, she does not believe why she should feel insecure about stuff that happened in the past.
He felt like his girlfriend was missing the point, though, and then told her to stop sharing things that most people would be embarrassed about.
Instead, he suggested sharing other things about her life– like how she just got a promotion, traveled to Europe, and purchased her dream car.
And, after that, she understandably got really offended.
“But I am also still shoveling cat pee and stinking garbage every day, so it sounds like you are just embarrassed by me. You suck for saying I should have more shame. I am damn proud of myself, and it sounds like you are the one who is ashamed,” she snapped at him.
And since the altercation, he has been increasingly nervous about the dinner with his CEO. Nonetheless, he is also now wondering if basically asking his girlfriend not to be herself was an insanely rude thing to do.
If you were his girlfriend, would you have gotten offended, too? Was asking his girlfriend to “tone it down” out of line?
