Have you ever waited for the bus or hustled to work in the winter, only to be embarrassed by your bright red cheeks and blushing nose after reaching the warm indoors?

Well, this year, women around the U.S. are saying goodbye to the shame and actually embracing this chilly look with a new trend.

“Cold girl” makeup has been all the rage, with enthusiasts trying to replicate the winter-kissed look we are left with after venturing out into the brisk air.

This makeup trend is glossy and mimics the flushed and frosty appearance we get after fetching the mail, taking a walk, going skiing, or doing literally anything that causes us to shiver.

But, while many “cold girls” have just been focusing this trend on their facial makeup– sporting matte foundation, blushing cheeks, and glossy pink lips– some are also letting the fad influence their manicures.

“Blush nails” are a mani trend that originated in Korea, giving nails a healthy and subtle glow that fits in perfectly with the “cold girl” look.

Essentially, the nail base is a nude color– meant to match your personal skin tone. Then, in the center, there is a pop of radial ombré pink– making you look like you just walked inside from a long day of shopping the wintery New York City streets or skiing down the slopes.

The resulting look is simultaneously subtle yet eye-catching and is an interesting play on the “aura nails” trend that spread like wildfire over this past summer.

So, as we plunge deeper into January, now is the perfect time to try this nail style out for size. Plus, there are not just one but two ways for you to replicate this chilly look at home.

Method 1

The first method actually allows you to get creative and use your very own powder blush makeup. So, not only can you have a bit of fun experimenting, but you can also perfectly match the “cold girl” look on your cheeks and nose to your mani.

After finding the right shade, scrape some pigment out of the blush pot and onto a clean surface. This will help you avoid cross-contaminating your polish and blush palette.

Next, apply a base, neutral coat, and allow that to dry. Then, go in with a blush or baby-pink coat and wait for that to dry, too.

Once you have applied those two coats, you can start the fun part– adding the blush. First, dab your finger into the blush to pick up a small amount of pigment. Then, begin rubbing your finger in a circular motion in the center of your nail.

The goal is to concentrate the most pigment in the center, with the edges radiating out like a gradient or ombré.

Finally, once you are satisfied, you can apply a clear top coat to seal in the blushy look.

Method 2

A second way to get some beautiful “blush nails” is by going old school and sticking to just polish.

First, throw on a single coat of your favorite pink-based sheer polish. Then, allow it to dry, and pick out your blush color. A simple way to find the best blush polish for you is by comparing it to your favorite makeup blush.

Then, once you have found the right shade, grab a cosmetic wedge and polish a circle of the blush shade onto it. Afterward, you should use the wedge like a stamp and lightly press it onto the center of your nail.

Repeat this step a few times in order to diffuse the edges and ensure a richer color in the center.

Finally, once you are satisfied, you can finish with a shiny top coat or apply one more thin layer of the original sheer base to blend the blush further.
