She’s Issuing A Warning To Be Careful Who You Give Your House Keys To After A Man Left Scary Love Notes All Over Her House

When moving into your own place, it’s always a good idea to give a spare key to someone you trust immensely, like a family member or reliable next-door neighbor.
As great as it is to know that someone can have access to your home in case of an emergency, we just found a story that serves as a lesson to be extra wary about who you hand one of your spare keys to.
She was in the middle of getting a divorce from her ex-husband, which ended up being a very stressful process, as a big part of the process was a custody battle over her young son. Many friends and colleagues were reaching out in support, including a man she knew professionally, presumably someone she or her husband had worked with in the past.
This man wanted to help her and offered to serve as a character witness in one of her divorce proceedings, claiming he knew things about her ex-husband’s behavior at work events.
After reaching out, he began calling her regularly to make sure she was alright.
“This wasn’t someone I knew well prior to the separation, and he was much older than I was, but [he] claimed to have experience with divorce and custody,” she explains. “I figured it was a good idea to be polite and not alienate him since his testimony was important.”
Although she was glad to have his testimony for her divorce proceedings, she still had a weird feeling about this man. Then, he started infiltrating her personal life under the guise of someone trying to help out.
For example, one day, he called on a day when her son was sick. When he found out, he offered to drive to the store and get supplies for them, which she appreciated and accepted. But after that initial visit, he began dropping by her house unexpectedly often.
He continued to offer to help her out, and even though she was a bit uncomfortable around him, she didn’t want to turn him away for fear that he would end up testifying against her instead of her ex.

At one point, he did things around the house, like helping her set up a new security system her dad gave her. On a busy day, she needed someone to walk her dog and accepted his offer to do it. She gave him a spare key, which he returned once he was finished with the walk.
Things got especially weird when one day, he stopped by uninvited with a handful of home decor magazine clippings and started going off on a tangent about how they could decorate the house together.
“I was so weirded out that I made an excuse to leave, started ignoring his calls, and took my son and dog to stay with my parents for several weeks to avoid a drop-in,” she recalls. “I came home a few weeks later, thinking he would have gotten the hint, and it was a quiet day.”
The next day she took her son to the zoo and returned home rather tired. She put her son down for a nap and took one herself. When she woke up about an hour later, she noticed a rose bush was placed on her bedside table.
It wasn’t there before. On the bush was a post-it note with a message about planting it in her backyard. She became terrified once she recognized the handwriting – it belonged to the man who wouldn’t leave her alone.
She got out of bed to splash some water on her face and tried to decide whether to call her parents or the police. When she got into the bathroom, she discovered that the mirror had been covered in post-it notes with scary love notes from this man.
As she walked out of her bedroom and around the rest of her house, she noticed that more post-its were scattered everywhere. The creepy messages were posted on her walls, cabinets, etc. There was even a note stuck inside her coffee maker!
The worst part of all of this was when she found one in her kitchen that read, “You’re cute when you think no one is watching you.” How terrifying is that?
As it turned out, one of the security cameras that this man had helped her install was pointed right where he had left that note. He must have figured out her password and had been watching and listening to her through the cameras.
He also must have made a copy of her spare key the day he took her dog for a walk. When he broke into her house, her dog recognized him, so there was no warning to wake her up from her nap.
She didn’t call the police to avoid any legal troubles appearing in her divorce process. Instead, she called her parents, and her dad rushed over to change her locks and put a chain on her front door. They also changed the passwords for her security system.
She stayed with her parents for a few more days before returning home, scared that this man would have a major outburst once he realized he had been locked out of the house and security login.
One night when she was home alone, he showed up at her house and began banging on the front door. He was demanding to be let into “his house.”
“Gone were all the niceties,” she explains. “This was someone completely furious and derailed. All I could do was hide in my bedroom until he left, what felt like an hour later.”
He continued to show up every once and a while in the middle of the night and knock on the door. He would frantically try to get her attention on social media, but she would block every account he created.
Thankfully two years later, she was able to sell that house and move. She recalls finding more notes from that awful day as she packed up her things. She changed the privacy settings on all of her social media accounts and is careful not to post any pictures of her house online.
In addition to all of these precautions, she avoids places where she had seen him in the past, like certain networking events. Luckily, she’s seen no sign of him since she moved.
