The Secretary of War issued a warrant for her arrest later that year. She was banished to the Confederate capitol, Richmond, Virginia, before being sent to Canada.
Isabella married a Union naval officer, Samuel Hardinge, before having a daughter with him and moving to England.
So what was Isabella’s next career move? She became an actress and author. She wrote memoirs on her experiences during the Civil War and starred in theatrical productions.
By 1886, she had lived through two more marriages and had four more children. She moved back to the United States to continue her acting career, often recreating her Civil War experiences.
