When someone from your past insists on paying for attention you aren’t even giving them while you’re in a committed relationship, is that considered crossing a line?
This 22-year-old girl has spent close to four months now dating her 26-year-old boyfriend. They’re definitely getting serious, as they have exchanged “I love yous,” and overall, their relationship is pretty amazing.
“…I genuinely see this relationship going somewhere. Before we started dating, I had two different men who would regularly pay me to text them,” she explained.
“Sometimes it was just casual conversation, and sometimes it involved [romance]. One of them also received a few suggestive pictures from me before I met my boyfriend.”
“After I got into my relationship, I stopped [sending these texts] entirely. However, one of these men still messages me almost every day, saying things like, ‘You up? I’m [excited].’ Even if I don’t respond, he’ll often send me money anyway—usually totaling around $100–200 a week.”
This man has previously told her that he thinks she’s gorgeous and wants to spoil her, so the money is for her to go get her nails done or go out to lunch.
Occasionally, she will respond to this man by saying she is up, along with a wink emoji. She knows that’s enough to keep him sending that cash, which is why she even bothers. She just wants that cash money, and she’s putting in virtually no effort to get it.
She doesn’t ever reply to this man with more than that, and she doesn’t do anything that could be considered inappropriate in the context of her relationship. Unless, you know, winking at another man constitutes that.
She hasn’t mentioned the texts to her boyfriend at all, because she’s convinced it will upset him. However, the guilt has been weighing her down, so she thinks it’s time to quit texting this man for good.

“I’m also wondering whether, even if I never responded again but continued accepting money he voluntarily sends through Cash App without blocking him, that would still make me [a jerk],” she continued.
What do you think?
Well, she’s playing with fire, and she knows this isn’t cool; otherwise, the guilt wouldn’t be eating away at her. It’s not appropriate to be engaging with other men like this while being in a committed relationship.
Replying with a wink emoji is a deliberate signal to keep a man financially invested under false, romantic pretenses. She needs to block this man and stop accepting his money before her boyfriend finds out.
Actively maintaining an emotional connection with a former paying client while telling her boyfriend that she loves him is just plain wrong.
