Most people look back on being 13 and remember awkward middle school dances, fun sleepovers, and crushes. Usually, the biggest crisis was forgetting your homework or begging your parents to let you stay up until midnight. Pregnancy was the last thing on anyone’s mind.
But for one girl, instead of spending her early teenage years obsessing over pop stars, she found herself facing a life-changing event before she was even old enough to drive.
When TikToker Hannah (@hannahdownzz) was 13 years old, she had a hunch that she was pregnant. She went over to her friend’s house with a plan in mind.
Her friend’s mom was a “cool mom” who let anything happen under her roof.
That night, she and her friend broke the news that she might be pregnant. So, her friend’s mom drove them to the store to buy pregnancy tests. But they didn’t stop there. The mom also purchased a case of alcohol.
“My pregnancy test plan was to drink all the Smirnoffs and then take the test in the morning,” said Hannah. “Mom buys it all for us, and then we go home, and we did just that. We spent all night drinking.”
The next morning, she woke up and took the test. Of course, it was positive for pregnancy. Looking back, Hannah now recognizes how messed up the entire situation was. An adult buying alcohol for minors, especially one who was possibly pregnant, is deeply irresponsible.
This so-called cool mom did not provide any proper guidance at all. What she should have done was prioritize Hannah’s safety and well-being, encourage her to seek medical care, and contact a trusted adult.
Hannah noted that she did take her to Planned Parenthood, but all they did was have her take another pregnancy test. It cost $40, which she had to scrounge up herself.
In the comments section, many TikTok users were shocked by her friend’s mother’s role in the situation and insisted that the mom needed to be in jail for child neglect. In addition, they reflected on just how different their own lives looked when they were 13 years old.
“When I was 13, I was trying to figure out how to get out of running the mile,” stated one user.
“When I was 13, I was rollerblading and playing with American Girl dolls,” commented another.
“When I was 13, my mama used to have to come check my closet for monsters before I went to sleep,” wrote a third.
“At 13, I was still convinced Edward Cullen would fall for me if he gave me the chance,” added a fourth.
“My 13-year-old just finished singing Avril Lavigne karaoke at a pool party she had after her art day camp where she and her friends made fairy garden furniture,” chimed in someone else.
