The following column is the opinion and analysis of the writer.

I think it’s safe to say when going on a first date, everyone wants to put their best foot forward and make the best first impression they can.

But honestly, there is no playbook for the right way to handle things on the first date. The truth is, you can do everything right, and things still may not work out.

Regardless, let’s look at some things that are totally within your control that can lead to making a great impression on a first date.

Dress To Impress

When it comes to picking out your date outfit, make sure to wear something that will not only make you feel comfortable but confident as well.

Whatever it is you choose to wear, make sure you feel good in it. The confidence and self-esteem that you exude will definitely be something that your date picks up on.

Be Confident In Yourself

Here’s your reminder to be confident in yourself! The energy that you bring into a first date will, in turn, make an impression on your date. Let that energy radiate off of you that you’re confident in who you are and what you have to offer.

Pay Attention To Your Behavior Patterns

Make sure when you’re on your date that you pay attention to your behavior patterns. This means your eye movement, gestures, body language, voice, eye contact, and microexpressions.

These little things can make a wonderful or awful first impression. Make sure you are giving off the vibe you want to give off to have a great first date.

Pick A Great Location

Choose to make your first date something or somewhere you both will enjoy. Don’t be afraid to pick a unique location or activity rather than the old-school dinner and a movie schtick.

Some fun first date choices could be an arcade, mini-golf, a theme park, a picnic at the park, a coffee at your favorite shop, etc.

Select a location that is fun and encourages conversation. Your choice of venue tells your date a lot about what to expect from you long-term should the date go well.

Ask Open-Ended Questions

Asking open-ended questions on your date allows the respondent to elaborate, provide details, and prompt a conversation.

Close-ended questions only allow for a yes or no response. Which one do you think is better for getting to know someone on a first date?

Asking better questions is a great way to show someone you genuinely want to learn more about them and that you are a great communicator – making a great first impression on a first date.

Some examples of open-ended questions to ask can include things like “What is your favorite food and why?” or “What do you enjoy doing in your free time?”

Put Your Phone Away

Nobody wants to feel like they are the third wheel to you and your phone, especially when out on a date.

But on the other hand, showing your undivided attention conveys respect for them and indicates that you want to be there.

So unless it is an emergency, don’t be on your phone during your first date (or any date, for that matter).

Do you have any additional guidelines you follow when it comes to making a great impression on a first date?
