Hotels tend to be the top choice of accommodation for people when they travel the world, but vacation rentals are a popular pick as well.

They can be more convenient and cost-friendly for families and larger groups. They are often preferred over hotels because they can feel more like a home away from home.

However, vacation rentals do have their downsides and plenty of people have been exposed to them.

TikToker Kaya Summer (@kaya.summer) is sharing her horrific experience staying at a vacation rental property she booked through an online rental site.

Kaya and her family used the travel website Vrbo to book a vacation rental during New Year’s. They stayed at the rental property for a week and had a great time there.

They had no complaints, and everything was fine until their very last night. At 2:30 in the morning, Kaya woke up to some voices in the living room. She was confused because everyone was supposed to be asleep.

Her little brother had fallen asleep in the living room, so she assumed it was her brother and dad talking.

But then, she realized that she didn’t recognize one of the voices. The conversational tone in the living room began to escalate to full-on shouting, so she darted out of bed to see what was going on.

When she entered the hallway, she saw two strange men in the living room. Her dad and brother were with them, looking completely flabbergasted.

The men were yelling, demanding to know why they were in their house. Kaya’s dad explained that they had rented their place and pulled up the receipts to show them. They all went outside to discuss the situation.

The men were still angry and accused them of breaking in, even though Kaya and her family had already displayed proof of their reservation and the name of the property manager.

They wouldn’t let it go and ended up calling the police. When the police arrived, Kaya and her family showed them their reservation, and the cops left shortly after.

Everyone was too shaken up to go back to sleep. The next morning, they hopped on their flight to return home.

The following afternoon, Kaya called Vrbo to inform them of what had happened. She noted that the front door of the house they had rented didn’t have a deadbolt, and the code on the keypad had never been changed.

She was put on hold for thirty minutes just to be told she needed to send them proof that the situation had happened.

So, she sent them a video of the man breaking in, along with a police report. She didn’t hear anything back from them for a week.

Finally, her dad called them and was told that the case had been resolved because the man had promised never to do anything like that again.

Her dad was adamant about pursuing the case further, but they continued giving him the run-around, so Kaya took to social media to air out the travel company’s misdeeds.

Her story went viral, prompting Vrbo to contact her through social media so they could investigate her family’s case.

Soon after, she received an email from Vrbo’s social response team stating that they would be giving her a full refund for her stay.

She also praised viewers for their efforts in helping to spread the word about her family’s experience with Vrbo, expressing her gratitude for the community on TikTok.

Overall, the incident has opened her eyes to the importance of staying vigilant while on vacation, and she and her family will be taking further steps to ensure their safety in the future.
