Rich people are no strangers to making wildly out-of-touch statements about their sailing adventures or butlers forgetting to iron a shirt in front of average folk struggling to get by in this economy. Their bizarre lifestyles and outrageous complaints certainly highlight society’s wealth gap.

In a video that has racked up 8.8 million views, TikToker Antoinette (@amoneymoves) is recounting an experience she had while tutoring a child of a wealthy family at their house. The incident served as a brutal reminder not to compare herself to rich people.

“I stopped comparing myself to rich people after I tutored their kids,” she began the video. She then provided a frame of reference on the level of wealth of the client featured in her video, stating that they had a walk-in refrigerator in their mansion.

At the time, Antoinette drove a very beat-up old car from house to house in order to tutor the kids of families who were extremely well-off.

One day, her car broke down, and she found out it would cost her $1,500 to fix, which she was unable to afford. So, she called her most frequent client to let them know she couldn’t make it to work because her car had broken down.

After a moment of silence, her client told her to come anyway and that she would help her out with her car troubles. Antoinette didn’t know what kind of assistance to expect from her client.

She entertained the thought that she might pay for a ride-hailing service or let her borrow one of their many cars. Her car was struggling to make it up the hill to the family’s mansion.

“Once I finally got there, she sat me down, looked me in the eyes, and said, ‘I’m going to give you an advance because my son will not pass the eighth grade without you,'” explained Antoinette.

“Which was true. They kept going on international vacations, and I was writing all his essays and submitting all these final projects.”

She added that her client wrote her a check for $1,500, gave her a referral to her husband’s mechanic, and said that she would receive a discount because they referred her.

Antoinette deeply appreciated the act of generosity and struggled to hold back her tears of gratitude. She also noted that her client’s son had been watching the whole exchange. After Antoinette finished expressing her thanks, things took a turn.

“She turns to her son and says, ‘You see, son? This is why we need to help people like her. This is why we have money. Some people can’t even afford to fix their cars, and you should be grateful that you are as privileged as you are,'” recalled Antoinette. “And they both turned and gave me such a look of pity that I had to excuse myself and go cry in the restroom,” she continued.

She went on to say that her client was not actually helping her out of the kindness of her heart but was merely using her as an example to her son and to help him pass the eighth grade. She also revealed that the $1,500 was not a gift, and the money was taken out of her next few paychecks. She tutored her son for a few more years after that, and in the end, she never received her last paycheck from the family.

“I spent at least ten hours a week in their home for three years straight, helping their son get through each grade, and in the end, I meant nothing to her. She couldn’t even be bothered to send me my last paycheck,” concluded Antoinette.

Many TikTok users shared similar experiences about dealing with wealthy people in the comments section.

“I worked at a car wash in high school; the people with luxury cars never tipped, but the people with normal cars always did,” commented one user.

“My boss gave us, the only 4 employees at the company, a $25 Xmas bonus, then proceeded to tell us how he bought a $9,000 TV that didn’t fit the wall, so he had to have the wall expanded & made a nook,” wrote another.

“My mom owns a landscaping company, and she always says the ones living in those big gated neighborhoods with huge houses are the STINGIEST about paying,” stated a third.

#stitch with @louie ? Pls don’t compare yourself to rich people bc I promise you they’re not as benevolent or thrifty as we think they are. Their actions are self-serving, and that’s how they get and stay rich. #storytime #richpeoplebelike #richpeoplestories
