When you’re a parent who loves to cook, but your children are picky eaters, your time in the kitchen can get pretty frustrating, especially when your children are capable of cooking for themselves.

One man recently snapped at his teenage daughter, who is extremely picky about what he cooks and critiques everything he makes her.

He and his wife are in their early 50s and have three children. He has a 24-year-old son named Eric from a previous marriage, and his wife has a 19-year-old daughter named Liz from a different marriage. Together, they have a 15-year-old son named David.

He is a big fan of cooking and loves trying new recipes. He’s become the main cook of the house as he enjoys spending time in the kitchen a lot more than his wife does.

All three kids are living at home for different reasons, so he’s been cooking for a full house. Eric is very easygoing and will eat just about anything. The same goes for David, although he’s allergic to eggs.

“I can work around these constraints pretty easily when I cook,” he said.

“Liz is a different story. She has always been kind of picky with the foods she dislikes, but it has gotten way worse. She went to college for a semester and then dropped out, so now she is living at home. While she was away, she developed some terrible pickiness.”

Liz not only has several food aversions but also constantly changes her diet. She’s tried going vegan, becoming a vegetarian, giving up oils, grains, etc. Her eating habits are hardly consistent, and it’s been hard for him to meet her needs while cooking something their entire family can eat.

Liz is especially picky when it comes to foods he wants to cook for enjoyment. Sometimes, it feels like he and Liz could debate for hours about what to make for dinner because he wants to make something that everyone would enjoy.

A few nights ago, he ended up snapping after Liz became critical of a dish she specifically asked him to make.

“Two nights ago, I cooked a dish that Liz told me looked good in a book,” he recalled.

“We all sat down for dinner, and everybody loved it except Liz. She complained that she didn’t realize there were peanuts in the recipe.”

Liz doesn’t necessarily dislike the taste of peanuts, but she said that peanuts were unhealthy and they shouldn’t be eating them.

Then, she asked him if he would make her something else. He snapped at her, telling her he was fed up with her picky eating and critiquing. He told her she could eat what he chose to make the family or cook for herself from now on.

Liz began crying, telling him that wasn’t fair because he takes the boys’ eating restrictions into consideration.

He reminded her that Eric only dislikes one specific food and David has an allergy, so that wasn’t the same thing as what she does.

His wife didn’t back him up and accused him of doing something he felt was inaccurate.

“My wife took her side and said that I am being too sensitive and mean because Liz is not my real daughter, and I am showing favoritism,” he added.

“I told my wife that she can cook Liz’s meals if she wants, but I’m not going out of my way to meet her needs.”

Was he wrong to refuse to cook for Liz, or was his outburst understandable?
