It is no secret that trying to lose weight is difficult to do. It takes a lot of hard work to transform your body and stay dedicated to fitness.

TikToker Samantha (@samantha_abreuu) lost 99 pounds all on her own without the help of any fitness trainers or weight loss programs, and she’s discussing the mindset shift she had that allowed her to accomplish such a major feat.

Growing up, she had always been overweight. Doctors told her repeatedly that she needed to lose weight. As a result, she developed an unhealthy relationship with food, using it as a coping mechanism to deal with her struggles.

The problem persisted until March of 2020. It was then that she became fully aware of how she was treating her body. She finally began to take her health more seriously and stayed consistent with diet and exercise.

Samantha credits her consistency to the positive mindset she was able to maintain throughout her fitness and weight loss journey. Instead of concentrating on how difficult it would be to reach her goal and attaching her happiness to achieving that goal, she focused on finding joy in the journey.

“When I shifted my mindset from focusing on only the end goal to enjoying the present moment, that’s when this whole weight loss journey became really easy for me,” Samantha explained. “I never saw this as a weight loss journey. I saw this as a lifestyle change.”

She added that the new lifestyle taught her habits to keep her mentally and physically healthy while improving her quality of life. This perspective helped her commit herself to making the changes more easily.

She also found it helpful to look at herself from a third-person point of view, which caused her to start taking care of herself the way she would take care of her parents or friends.

“We are our own longest and dearest friends, so why not look after ourselves as if we are our longest and dearest friends,” Samantha pointed out. “Start giving yourself the care and the love that you deserve, and whether that be through health and fitness or through being nicer to yourself for your own mental health, start somewhere.”
