Does anything highlight family tension faster than money? It doesn’t matter how old you are; siblings can still get jealous, take shots, and drag you down when they feel insecure. And when it happens at a family dinner in front of an audience, the claws come out quickly.

This 28-year-old woman was adopted seventeen years ago after her biological mom was unable to care for her because she was struggling with addiction.

She is disabled and has had to use a wheelchair ever since she was a child. Now, her Aunt Diane and her wife adopted her so she would be spared from landing in foster care.

She does have two biological brothers (her oldest one is Chris), and they were not adopted as they were adults when she was placed. She has since reconnected with her bio family, and her mom and brothers frequently spend time with her and her Aunt Diane.

This past weekend, they all were at her Aunt Diane’s house for dinner, and her 39-year-old fiancé, John, was there along with her, as well as her 16-year-old adopted sister, Katie.

“We got engaged a few weeks ago. John is wealthy. Chris has kind of been weird about John and his money. Specific example that comes to mind is Chris and his girlfriend ‘Maddie’ have 4 kids and Chris, without talking to Maddie, asked John and me not to spend more than $60 each on Christmas gifts for the kids,” she explained.

“We agreed and applied that to all the kids in the family (except for Katie) to keep things fair. Maddie and Chris have been together for 10 years, and she’s been really wanting him to propose since their first was born 8 years ago.”

“When Maddie asked to see the ring John had made for me, she made a comment to Chris saying, ‘When you finally propose, you should go to the jeweler John did this ring is beautiful.’ Chris quickly said, ‘Yeah, that’s not happening.'”

John very kindly said he’s friends with the jeweler and would be happy to help Chris get an amazing deal on an engagement ring. Chris got angry and insisted that John should quit encouraging Maddie to want boujee jewelry.

She jumped in and told Chris that he should be nicer to John, and he was too poor to afford to buy a ring from the jeweler without a discount.

Chris freaked out on her, calling her stuck-up. He then made a gross remark about how she only got a rich guy because he clearly likes that she’s in a wheelchair.

“My aunt heard that comment and asked Chris and Maddie to leave. My mom is pissed at me, but my aunts are on my side. My other brother is staying neutral,” she continued.

“I feel kind of bad, but I also don’t understand why he snapped like he did over an actual generous offer.”

Look, maybe calling Chris poor was a low blow, but he came at them first. He was jealous, nasty, and crossed the line with that comment about her disability. I think she was right to stand up to Chris, and if he wants respect, he should start by giving it.

Do you think she was wrong to insult Chris?
