In 2006, a single mother in Florida and her six-year-old daughter were brutally murdered before their home was set on fire. Over the years, the case has gone cold. Their killer has not yet been brought to justice.
Heather Radcliffe was a 28-year-old single mother to her six-year-old daughter, Kira, a first-grade student at Glen Springs Elementary School.
Heather was the boss of a crew of tree trimmers for a local company. The mother and daughter died just a couple of weeks before Christmas.
On December 8, Heather and Kira arrived home with their Christmas tree strapped to Heather’s pickup truck. They left it on the truck because they weren’t able to carry it inside.
Then, on December 9, around 6:30 a.m., Heather’s neighbor saw flames shooting from the roof of her house and called emergency services.
Heather’s sister, Maria, lived a mile away. She woke up to the sound of sirens and immediately sensed that something was terribly wrong.
Heather’s family initially believed that the fire was a tragic accident, triggered by faulty wiring from a ceiling fan. However, the firefighters ended up finding two separate ignition points. The fire was first started on Heather’s mattress. The second was set in Kira’s bedroom.
When firefighters arrived, they found the front door unlocked. After putting out the flames, they were able to safely enter the house.
They heard a faint pinging noise and tracked it to the living room, where they found Kira’s body. Her mother’s phone was lying next to her, but she died before she could call for help.

The girl was dressed in a nightgown and had been attempting to dial the number of a family friend, who worked at the local police department.
Kira’s body was found outside her mother’s bedroom. Investigators believed that she had been heading to her mother’s bedroom when she encountered the attacker.
An autopsy showed damage to her throat, indicating that she had been choked. She ultimately died of smoke inhalation. The attacker may have thought Kira was already dead after strangling her and leaving her on the floor.
In the bedroom, Heather’s body was found partially unclothed on the floor. She was possibly assaulted. She was shot three times, twice in the head and once on the left side of her chest. The gunshot to the chest was the one that killed her.
After murdering the mother and daughter, the suspect left to get gasoline and set the house on fire to burn the evidence. Unfortunately, he succeeded in getting rid of any fingerprints and DNA.
Additionally, Heather’s dog was found dead in her home office. Usually, Heather would let the dog roam freely throughout the house. She only shut the dog in a room when company was over. This suggested that Heather knew her killer and had invited him inside.
The police questioned Kira’s father and Heather’s old boyfriends, but they all had verified alibis. They have been unable to connect anyone to the murders. The motive for the murders was unclear.
Anyone with information about the case is urged to call the Gainesville Police Department at 352-334-2483 or Crime Stoppers at 352-372-7867.
