Do you have someone in your life who has a nasty habit of lying to get you to do things for them? How would you feel if that person was the parent of your partner?

One man recently had to confront his girlfriend’s mom, who tends to lie about not having her wallet with her whenever they’re out shopping to get him to buy things for her.

He’s 23 and in a relationship with Kelly, who’s 25-years-old. Kelly has two moms, Gina and Stacy. Gina is in her mid-60s, and Stacy is in her early 70s.

While he gets along with Gina and Stacy for the most part, and they’re both very nice, Stacy is a notorious liar. Since he started dating Kelly, she’s complained about Stacy’s lying several times.

He would become upset because he hated seeing Kelly so stressed out and distraught over her mom’s behavior. However, little did he know the lying would start affecting him too.

“I went to run errands with Stacy last week, and she forgot her wallet, [which] I thought was a genuine mistake,” he explained.

“She’s in her 70s [and if] she’s forgetting things, it’s no big deal. I’d buy her the couple of things she needed, and she’d get [the money] back to me when she could. It wasn’t until later that day when I was alone with Kelly and recounting my day, that she stopped me and asked if Stacy had me pay for something.”

When he explained the situation to Kelly, she told him Stacy had lied about forgetting her wallet in the past so people would buy her things. Stacy then promised to pay people back but never followed through.

This was hard for him to hear, as he likes Stacy and didn’t want their relationship to become complicated because she started lying to him. Like most people, he also doesn’t like being lied to.

Stacy’s lying is especially interesting because she’s not in debt, has a decent amount of money, and her wife pays most of their bills.

A few days later, Stacy asked if he’d run some errands with her again. To prevent her from pulling the forgotten wallet trick again, he specifically asked her if she had everything she needed before they left, including her wallet.

“She said yes,” he recalled.

“I asked if she checked before we stepped outside, and she said yes again. So on we went, and after the initial errands, we stopped at the drug store, and she ended up asking me to grab her something while I was inside, claiming she forgot her wallet again.”

He decided to confront Stacy and asked her if she lied about having her wallet or if she lied about checking for her wallet before they left. Stacy pretended not to know what he was talking about, and he kept asking her why she had lied to him.

Stacy became defensive and accused him of having an attitude. He responded, “I don’t have an attitude; I’m just not going to deal with you lying to me. Lying has consequences.”

Since then, Stacy’s been giving him the cold shoulder, and Kelly said she hadn’t left her room since that day.

Should he apologize to Stacy, or was he right to call her out on her lie?
