About fifteen years ago, this man and his ex-wife got divorced. During the early years of their marriage, though, he inherited a home and placed his ex’s name on the deed. Then, they went on to have a daughter before they ultimately split up.

Now, during the divorce, he and his ex did get shared custody of their daughter. As for the house, however, his ex really wanted to take it. He claims to have fought very hard against that, though.

“It’s been my family home for three generations before I inherited it,” he reasoned.

So, in the end, he and his ex ultimately came to a compromise that was signed off on by a judge. Essentially, his ex got to live in the home rent-free until their daughter turned eighteen-years-old. Then, following their daughter legally becoming an adult, he would get the house back.

Additionally, during the years that his ex lived in the home rent-free, he was also responsible for paying all of the utilities, maintenance, and property taxes.

The only thing his ex had to agree to was not making any modifications or upgrades to the home without his written permission.

Plus, if she got any work done with his permission, his ex would be solely responsible for finding an insured and legally-licensed professional, as well as paying for the cost of the upgrades.

Anyway, his daughter recently turned eighteen. And in the months leading up to the birthday, he began sending his ex move-out notices.

Then, the following day after his daughter celebrated becoming an adult, he showed up at his home with a contractor to look at the property– because, apparently, he was hoping to have some work done before he moved in.

After he arrived, though, his ex refused to let him in. So, he was forced to pull the divorce agreement card and remind her that he was the legal owner of the house and that she was technically no longer allowed to be there. In turn, he said that if his ex did not allow him inside, then he would call the police.

And after that, he claims that she got the point and opened the front door. But to his total surprise, absolutely nothing was packed up inside the home. In fact, it did not seem like his ex was planning to move out at all.

This caused them to end up getting into an argument while he walked through to inspect the home. According to him, the spat was about his ex wanting extra time in the house.

He was not having that, though, and told her to be out by the end of the week or else he would have her belongings thrown out.

Once they got to the living room, though, he claims to have been “shocked into silence”– because, apparently, his ex had decided to tear down a bedroom wall in order to expand the living room without his permission. And he was pissed.

“She turned my four-bedroom house into a three-bedroom one. I know I did not sign off on this, and from the looks of it, the work was probably done by her boyfriend and not a professional,” he revealed.

So, he was beyond furious and ended up screaming at his ex-wife. Then, he actually told her that he was going to “sue her for everything she has” before storming out of the home.

Unfortunately, though, his ex apparently “went crying” to their daughter about what had happened. In turn, his entire family is now on his ex’s side– urging him not to sue and to give her one more month to find another place.

And this includes his daughter, who now also thinks that he is acting like a total jerk by trying to kick his ex out and sue her so close to Christmas.

So, even though he honestly believes that he is in the right and knows that he is legally entitled to take that course of action, his daughter’s opinion of him ultimately matters most.

“My daughter is a wonderful girl, and I couldn’t ask for a better daughter. She has a big heart and cares about her mother,” he explained.

In turn, he has been left in a pretty tough spot and is now wondering if kicking his ex out and suing her right before Christmas is the best way to handle this situation.

Can you imagine getting to live rent-free for fifteen years, with all utilities, maintenance, and taxes paid for? Do you think the divorce agreement was fair and reasonable or not? Should he go through with legal action even though his daughter disagrees? If you were in his shoes, how would you navigate this situation?
