One Picky Eater In Her Family Wants Her To Cook An Entire Christmas Dinner Using Only Salt As A Seasoning, But She Is Refusing To Ruin Everyone Else’s Holiday Meal By Making It Bland
This year, this woman’s entire family will be celebrating Christmas at her home after going two years without any holiday parties due to COVID-19. So, as you can imagine, she and her entire family are extremely excited.
Since her family members have all kinds of dietary restrictions, though, she decided to ask ahead of time if anyone had discovered any new food intolerances or allergies.
That way, she could come up with a Christmas dinner menu that everyone would be able to enjoy.
Everyone ended up reporting back that there were no new dietary considerations for her to work around, though, so she was able to proceed with her “normal” meal options. In fact, she has already completed all of the shopping for her Christmas dinner ingredients.
But then, just a couple of days ago, her sister Sarah wound up asking if her twenty-three-year-old brother-in-law, Ben, could also attend the holiday dinner– because, for whatever reason, Ben’s parents did not want him at their Christmas gathering.
And she had no problem with inviting one extra person, so she said yes. Then, she texted Ben and gave him the same option to submit any dietary restrictions before the meal. To her complete surprise, though, Ben turned out to be an extremely picky eater.
In fact, he actually has an aversion to any type of food seasoning aside from salt. How bland!
“I was really shocked. My family and I love spices and seasoning, and the idea of using just salt in food appalls me,” she admitted.
Still, she did not want to make Ben uncomfortable and tried to cater to his preferences. More specifically, she said that she could make three items just for Ben simply using salt– chicken, pasta, and mashed potatoes.
Despite her trying to be really accommodating, though, Ben still claimed that the menu just would not work. Why you might be wondering?
Well, apparently, he pointed out that there would be an entire table filled with seasoned food– and he claimed he just could not stand the smell of spices.
Moreover, Ben even tried to tell her that she should just cook the entire Christmas dinner using only salt!
So, she ended up not responding to Ben’s texts after that and decided to go directly to Sarah. And while speaking to Sarah, she basically said that Ben attending the dinner would not work if he wanted to change the entire menu for everyone else.
“Either he ate his food– the chicken, mashed potatoes, and pasta– and left the others alone, or he better not come,” she told Sarah.
Thankfully, Sarah did agree that Ben’s request was a bit ridiculous, and Sarah claimed that she would talk to her husband, Tom– who is Ben’s brother.
Tom, however, did not understand her and Sarah’s perspectives on the issue. Instead, Tom actually went on to text in the family group chat and complained that she was mean for not accommodating Ben’s dietary restrictions. Plus, she even got accused of trying to exclude him from Christmas.
Until Tom sent that text, though, no one else in her family had known about what Ben requested. So, once the cat was out of the bag, everyone actually just ended up laughing at Tom and Ben’s “childish taste.” They also took her side and agreed that no one else would want to eat “boring food without seasoning.”
If you could not have guessed, though, the mockery really pissed Tom off. So, he ended up calling the entire family, and especially her, a huge jerk.
Then, Tom threatened not to attend Christmas at all unless they changed the whole menu for Ben!
So, at that moment, she could not take any of the craziness anymore and ended up telling Tom off.
“I told Tom that I wasn’t going to ruin the whole family’s Christmas due to his brother being a picky eater who cannot stand spices,” she vented.
She also pointed out how Ben does not have any special conditions or food restrictions and ended up calling him a spoiled adult who “eats five foods.” Yikes!
Afterward, Tom retaliated by calling her a straight-up jerk for saying that. Then, he left the family group chat. And even though the rest of her family has since agreed with her statements, Sarah is still a bit upset that Tom no longer wants to attend the Christmas celebration.
So now, with Christmas racing around the corner and Tom refusing to attend, she has been left wondering whether refusing to cook only food without seasoning actually makes her a jerk or not.
Why do you think Ben cannot even be around the smell of other spices? Is it fair to expect an entire family to change their meal plans because of Ben’s aversion to spices, even after he was offered three separate food options? Did she have a right to tell Tom off or not? If you were in her shoes, how would you handle this situation?
