She Was Being Set Up With Her Manager’s Son But Then Overheard Her Manager Revealing Some Serious “Icks,” So She Canceled The Date, And Now Her Manager Is Pretty Upset
This young twenty-year-old woman just started a new job last month. And for the most part, everything had been going well with her coworkers– who she claims are cool and fun people.
Well, that was until just three days ago when she got stuck in a very awkward situation with her assistant manager, Sherry.
Now, for some context, Sherry is forty-five years old and has a son named Travis, who is nineteen.
And when she first started working at her new office and met Sherry, the topic of relationships inevitably came up.
And in the past, these conversations would have normally been shut down by her since she was in a long-term committed relationship.
This past July, though, that relationship ended. So, when Sherry asked if she was single, she said yes and also revealed that she was thinking of jumping back into the dating pool.
It was at that point that Sherry told her about Travis. More specifically, Sherry claimed that she and Travis were around the same age, would probably get along, and asked if she would be interested in going out with him.
“I told her to let me think about it, and I would get back to her,” she recalled.
Anyway, that conversation occurred about six weeks ago. And about two weeks ago, she decided that going out on a few first dates with some new people would not be the worst thing in the world for her.
So, at the same time, she also told Sherry she was interested in Travis. More specifically, she asked Sherry to let Travis know that she would be open to meeting for coffee or something just to test the waters.
“But, that I probably would not be free until just after the new year because I am busy with work and personal stuff. Sherry said that sounded fine,” she explained.
Well, that was until this week when she overheard a conversation between Sherry and some other coworkers in the breakroom.
Apparently, Sherry and the two employees– who are also moms– were talking about their kids. And eventually, after one of the moms made a joke about spoiling their children, Sherry contributed some information about Travis.
“Travis doesn’t even make himself a sandwich. He just goes into the kitchen and sits there and pouts because he knows mama will come to do it for him,” Sherry apparently said.
Now, she rarely uses the term “ick.” But boy, hearing that come out of Sherry’s mouth sounded like a major red flag, and it made her totally turned off to even going on a first date with Travis anymore.
So, she asked if Sherry was actually being serious, and Sherry reportedly laughed, said yes, and claimed that Travis was just a “mama’s boy.”
And honestly, that was all she needed to hear. In turn, when she and the rest of the staff were leaving later that day, she decided to pull Sherry aside and reveal that she was no longer interested in going out with Travis.
If you could not have guessed it, though, Sherry was wholly confused. So, after Sherry kept pushing and pushing for her to share why she had a sudden change of heart, she was forced to come clean.
“I admitted that the sandwich thing turned me off and that I would never go out with a man who seemed so dependent or unwilling to do things by himself,” she said.
And Sherry did not take that response well. Apparently, her assistant manager became very upset and tried to tell her that since she was not a mom, she just did not understand the situation.
Moreover, Sherry tried to insinuate that “surely” she still expects her parents to do things for her before actually storming off.
Anyway, since that uncomfortable incident, Sherry still has not spoken to her. So now, she has been left wondering whether telling Sherry that she would never go out with her son makes her a jerk or not.
Do you think accepting a date set up by a coworker is a good idea? What about if that coworker is your manager? Even still, is it understandable why Travis not being able to take care of himself would be a turn-off? Is Sherry right about her “not being able to understand,” or did she have a right to cancel the date?
