If you’ve been working on prioritizing your mental health this year, you know that you can never have too many tips to make the process of taking care of yourself feel like second nature.

TikTok creator Jade (@wellnessbyjade) shares the five mental health tips that she wishes she had known earlier.

1. If It’s Not Going To Matter In 5 Years, Don’t Spend More Than 5 Minutes On It

People who suffer from mental health issues like anxiety and depression often have the tendency to hyperfocus on things that might seem small to others. It can be so easy to overthink things and spiral into what may feel like an existential crisis of sorts.

Jane shared in her video that we shouldn’t be worrying about things that are not important in the grand scheme of things. In reality, the fact that you gave the wrong answer in class last week or choosing not to go to a party with your friends this week is likely not going to matter in the long run.

Try not to stress yourself out by worrying about happenings or choices that you probably won’t remember in five years’ time.

2. Stop Comparing Yourself, You’re Perfect As You Are, With Your Imperfections

It can be so easy to compare ourselves to other people that we see online. Coming across a model’s Instagram account can lead to spiraling thoughts like, ‘Why don’t I look like that’ or ‘I wish I had her life.’ Whether it’s because of their style, their career, or their relationship, feeling jealous of these things is not a healthy mindset to have.

Jane encourages others to stop comparing themselves to others, no matter how challenging that may be. It’s important to remember that everyone has their own insecurities and imperfections, and embracing them ultimately leads to more confidence. You are uniquely you, and that should be celebrated and not compared to anyone else!

3. Celebrate The Little Wins

In her TikTok, Jane tells her viewers to celebrate the little wins that happen throughout our day-to-day lives. We tend to focus on the negatives, which leads us to be in a more negative mood.

As hard as it may sometimes be, it is super beneficial to your mental health to think about at least three positive ‘wins’ that happen each day. Jot them down in your journal, and when the week comes to an end, read through how many things you have gotten to celebrate.

These wins can be as small as brushing your teeth twice a day, reading a chapter of a book, or simply just making some time for self-care.

4. It’s Okay To Ask For Help

Sometimes, all we need is a little bit of help to get our minds into a better spot. Reaching out to a professional or a trusted friend or family member for help is a huge step toward getting a handle on your mental health if things have gotten too difficult to carry on your own.

Jane emphasizes the notion that asking for help does not make you weak; it makes you strong by recognizing and admitting that you need it.

5. Take 5 Minutes Everyday To Take Care Of Yourself Like Someone You Really Love

Jane knows that we are often the hardest on ourselves and our own worst critics. This is why she tells her viewers that it’s important that we aim to treat ourselves just like we would treat someone that we really love and care about.

If you catch yourself beating yourself up over something, stop for a moment and think about what you would say to your best friend if they were in the same situation as you. You would likely be a lot more kind and understanding, so try to then give yourself that empathy that you deserve.

Make yourself a meal you love, watch your favorite movie, or let yourself rest. All of these things that you would encourage your loved ones to do during a rough patch, allow yourself to do as well.
