This 44-year-old woman has been in a relationship with her boyfriend, 38, for a bit more than a year. Before committing to each other exclusively, they talked about how they envisioned their futures to ensure they were on the same page.

“I’ve been married twice. Both marriages ended badly, and I told him I had no intention of ever getting married again,” she said.

Her boyfriend was married once, and his marriage didn’t end on good terms. She has three children, and her two oldest are adults living with their respective significant others. Her youngest child is 16 and still lives with her at home.

Meanwhile, her boyfriend has an 11-year-old son and a 9-year-old daughter. Since her children are all older, she has more free time to live independently, while her boyfriend can’t because his children are so young. She was comfortable being introduced to her boyfriend’s children and befriending them but didn’t want to assume a parental role.

“He started referring to me as their mom. I told him he shouldn’t say things like that. He kept saying he would marry me and referring to me as his fiancĂ©e. Again, I told him not to say this,” she explained.

Throughout the entire time they’ve been dating, her boyfriend has only come to her house four times. Whenever she invites him over, he always makes excuses for why he can’t. He usually tells her he doesn’t have anyone to care for his children while he’s gone, even though he lives with his mom, who he could probably rely on to watch them.

Because her boyfriend hardly ever came to her house, she drove 40 minutes to his house. Every time they went on dates together, they had to drive her vehicle because her boyfriend always said he didn’t have enough gas in his car.

She found this strange because he earns a higher salary than she does, so she didn’t understand why he wouldn’t fill up his car. Last week, she, her boyfriend, and his daughter went to Walmart because she needed to buy some items for her home.

“When he pulls over to the jewelry counter, pins me up against the counter, and tells me to pick one. I tell him no; I don’t want a ring. We go back and forth, and I finally get free,” she shared.

After escaping her boyfriend, she finished shopping and purchased her items. Once they left the store and returned to her boyfriend’s house, she said she needed to go home. His behavior triggered her because she’d suffered abuse at the hands of past partners, and her boyfriend was aware of this.

Later that same night, she broke up with her boyfriend, and he made a threat to stop by her house. She didn’t take the threat seriously since he barely ever came to her house before the breakup. During the conversation, she explained that she would never marry him.

He questioned why, adding that he could wait until she was ready to get engaged, but she reminded him that from the start of their relationship, she’d been clear about never wanting to marry anyone again.

In response, her boyfriend claimed he’d forgotten she said this and told her he could continue dating her because, according to him, she’d come around eventually and agree to marry him. He then said she devastated him, and this breakup was tough.

She reiterated that she doesn’t want to marry anyone ever again, and after he demanded she pick out a ring at Walmart while his daughter was with them, she didn’t want anything more to do with him.

What would you have done if you’d been in her shoes?
