Back in December, 40-year-old Ana Maria Knezevic decided to leave her home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and travel to Spain to spend some time away.

While she is originally from Colombia, Ana is a naturalized American who, at the time, had been navigating a difficult divorce from her husband of 13 years, David Knezevic. So, she thought visiting Spain would help her get away and set out on a new adventure.

But, in February, Ana mysteriously vanished from her apartment complex, and her family and friends have been left reeling.

Upon arriving in Spain, she stayed in an apartment building located in the Salamanca district. Then, she was last seen by her neighbors at about 10:00 p.m. on February 2, 2024.

That evening, Ana reportedly spoke with a friend on the phone during an hour-long conversation and claimed she had planned to stay in because of the harsh weather outside.

Nonetheless, surveillance cameras inside her apartment building captured footage of a man wearing a motorcycle helmet spraypainting the lenses– ultimately disabling the security cameras. Then, the following day, two of Ana’s friends received bizarre text messages from her phone.

One of the messages was in English; meanwhile, one was in Spanish. But both claimed that Ana had met a new man and decided to run off with him for a couple of days.

“She wouldn’t do this… it is very unsafe and crazy behavior. She wouldn’t do that,” said Sanna Rameau, Ana’s friend who received the English text message.

“It just doesn’t make any sense.”

According to Sanna, the text was written in an “emotionless” style that sounded nothing like Ana’s tone. On the other hand, Sanna believes the Spanish text appeared so flat that it might have been run through Google Translate after originally being written in English.

“I met someone wonderful!! He has a summer house 2H [hours] from Madrid. We are going there now, and I will spend a few days there. Signal is spotty. I’ll call you when I get back,” one text from Ana’s phone read.

“Yesterday after therapy, I needed a walk, and he approached me on the street! Amazing connection. Like I never had,” another text read, sent from Ana’s phone one minute later.

Following these texts, Ana never responded to her friends again, and her cell phone was reportedly turned off. She also never returned home to her apartment that night and was never heard from again.

After receiving the strange texts and no further responses from Ana, her friends contacted the police. This prompted firefighters to visit Ana’s apartment on February 4 to conduct a welfare check.

Once they arrived at her apartment, she was nowhere to be found. But, at the same time, nothing looked askew in her apartment, and the unit had last been locked from the outside.

The following day, February 5, Ana was also scheduled to see another friend in Barcelona via train. So, the police in Marid claimed they would begin investigating Ana’s whereabouts if she did not show up for her scheduled Barcelona trip.

Ana never arrived in Barcelona, and afterward, detectives reportedly asked a Spanish judge to grant permission for Ana’s apartment and phone records to be searched. Since there was no strong evidence of a crime at the time, this request was denied.

So, it wasn’t until Ana’s two friends went to her apartment building on February 8 in search of Ana that they found out about the helmet-wearing man who had disabled the complex’s security cameras. At that point, her friends contacted the police again, and the search for Ana has continued ever since.

Investigators in both Madrid and Fort Lauderdale have launched investigations on either side of the Atlantic, but authorities have been hesitant to provide updates on the search effort.

Ana and her husband own a company that provides computer support for businesses in South Florida. Additionally, they own a home and two properties in Fort Lauderdale, one of which is under foreclosure right now.

During an interview with a detective, Ana’s brother, Juan Henao, called the divorce “nasty.”

“There is a substantial amount of money on the line to be split up between the two, and [her husband] is not happy about it,” Juan said.

According to Juan, Ana’s husband traveled to Serbia, his home country, back in January. He is reportedly cooperating with authorities in the investigation and has not been named a person of interest.

So, the search for exactly what happened to Ana after she finished her phone call on February 2 has continued, and her loved ones are anxiously awaiting answers.

“I’m just desperate to find answers. I’m just desperate to find a reason for who could have done this,” Sanna said.

Ana is four foot eleven, weighs 100 pounds, and has brown hair and brown eyes. What she was wearing prior to her disappearance remains unknown.

If you have any information regarding her case or whereabouts, you are urged to contact the Spanish National Police at 091 or the Fort Lauderdale Police Department at (954) 828-5700.
