A Penny In His Pocket Saved The Life Of This Soldier During The Civil War

He died in 1918. The penny that protected him was passed down through multiple generations in his family until they donated it to the Framingham History Center.

Today, the penny remains in the reference collection of Framingham History Center, encased under glass.

A large dent from the impact of the bullet can be seen on the penny. There are also fragments from the projectile that fused to the coin.

Other artifacts belonging to the museum that are related to the Civil War include a diary, an officer’s sash, a Bible, and a coat from General George Henry Gordon, who fought in the war and was a resident of Framingham.
