Birthdays are about celebrating another trip around the sun, not reopening old wounds. They should come with as little drama as possible, but not everyone gets the memo.

The other day, TikToker Liliana (@lilimaye404) received a text from her roommate, informing her that her ex-husband had left a letter for her birthday on their front porch.

Luckily, her roommate kept the letter from her until her birthday passed, so her special day wouldn’t be ruined. Liliana hasn’t spoken to her ex-husband since January.

Along with the letter, he left behind her engagement ring, her wedding ring, and the receipts for the rings. In the letter, he explained why he returned the rings to her. He also spelled four words wrong, which amused her.

The letter said, “Dear Lily, I’m giving you your ring back. It felt weird for me to have it/give away, or sell it. I’ve been thinking about this for a while, but I just got back to town.”

“My intention with giving this is simple. It is yours. I gave it to you. I don’t think that it was right for me to ask for it back. Therefore, do what you want with it.”

At the end of the letter, her ex-husband apologized for delivering the rings and letter so close to her birthday. At first, Liliana freaked out. But after she calmed down, she saw the act for what it really was: a cry for her attention. He was simply trying to get a response out of her.

“He waited a whole year to make a right decision,” said Liliana. “And he does it the day before my birthday. Like, that is not an accident. It is not out of the goodness of his heart.”

Of course, she is not going to grace him with a response. She plans on selling both of the rings and thinks she can get about $1,000 for them.

Some TikTok users took to the comments section to applaud her reaction and her roommate’s decision to protect her birthday.

“Giving it to you isn’t that weird (because they are yours), but waiting a year and then doing it at your birthday is extremely weird,” pointed out one user.

“Hundred percent he wanted you to think about him on your birthday. Your roommate rocks,” stated another.

“He was trying to ruin your birthday. You have good roommates. Congrats on getting away from that awful person and happy birthday,” commented a third.

“My ex hadn’t paid his half of the credit card bill on time until the day before my birthday. He paid it early for the next month. It was on purpose. They want you to think about them as much as they think about you,” added a fourth.
