Discovering that your partner has been unfaithful is heartbreaking under any circumstances. But finding out by literally walking in on them with someone else in your own home is just another level of devastation and betrayal.
In November 2013, when TikToker Tanya (@tanyauntangled) was six months pregnant with her second child, she learned her husband was cheating on her with a 19-year-old college student. She found them cuddled up on the couch together, right in her own home.
That day, Tanya was home alone with her five-year-old daughter, watching TV. At the time, her husband worked for the highway department, so it wasn’t unusual for him to work late. She believed it was just another ordinary evening, but before the night was over, her life would change forever.
Her husband finally came home at around midnight. Tanya was already in bed. He told her that he was going to lie down in the living room and would come to bed soon. She assumed that he was going to watch TV before bed.
She dozed off and ended up waking up at some point. Her husband wasn’t in the bed, so she walked out to the living room, only to find it empty. His car was still parked outside, which meant he hadn’t left the house.
She went downstairs and saw his sleeping figure on the couch in the family room. She turned on the light and was about to shake him awake when she saw something that made her immediately stop in her tracks. He was not alone on that couch.
“The air left my lungs,” said Tanya. “My husband was cuddled up with a woman on the couch. They’re both asleep. I stood there in shock. I couldn’t catch my breath. I walk back up the stairs, and I’m trying to collect myself, and I’m trying to think what to do.”
Her first instinct was to boil a big pot of water and dump it on the sleeping pair. Instead, she chose a less dangerous, but still dramatic response. She stormed off to the kitchen, filled a large pot with icy cold water, grabbed a butcher knife, and headed back downstairs.
Without warning, she threw the pot of freezing water on them, jolting them awake instantly. As they scrambled to their feet in confusion, Tanya started screaming at the girl to get out of her house.
The girl had the nerve to hide behind Tanya’s husband instead of hightailing it out of the house. Since Tanya was six months pregnant, she quickly ran out of energy.
Eventually, she went upstairs and called her sister in tears. Her sister’s husband had also cheated on her before, so Tanya knew that she would understand the situation.
Her sister provided her with the support and compassion she desperately needed after discovering a betrayal she never saw coming.
