Many years ago, TikToker and professional psychic Katie (@katiesurbeck) compared notes with her family and realized that they were all being haunted by the same ghost.
The spirit appears to each of them the same way. He is super tall and is just a dark silhouette. She has seen him with a top hat on before, and so has her dad. They have named the ghostly man Frank.
The first time Katie saw Frank was in the middle of the night. Her mom’s dog started barking out of nowhere, which was not normal for him to do.
When Katie got up to make sure the dog was okay, she saw Frank watching from the side of the room. She just ignored him and went back to sleep.
A couple of days later, she mentioned Frank to her mom and sisters, and they all chimed in about their own sightings of Frank. One night, her mom got up to get a drink of water in the middle of the night and saw Frank standing in the living room.
Katie’s sister had a similar experience. One night, they were having dinner as a family, like they did every night, when her sister suddenly turned pale. She had seen a man walk down the hallway to her bedroom.
In another incident, Katie’s other sister went to the bathroom in the middle of the night. They shared a room, and when she returned, Katie asked who the man who followed her was.
“She thought I was just pranking her to scare her, and when she realized I was dead asleep, she freaked out,” said Katie. “She turned all the lights on. So, we’re pretty sure I was dream-seeing Frank follow her.”
When Katie’s nephew was a baby, she remembered him babbling to someone, even though he was alone in his room. She knew that he must have been talking to Frank.

Furthermore, their stuff would go missing on occasion, such as a loaf of bread.
“Everybody I tell this to is like, well, you probably just left it at the store,” said Katie. “No, we’re being gaslit by the spirit because we get home from the grocery store, the brand-new loaf of bread goes on the counter, and was never seen ever again.”
As a professionally trained psychic medium, Katie believes that Frank is an ancestor just hanging out around their house. In the comments section, several TikTok users shared their own experiences with a shadowy spirit wearing a top hat.
“He’s a projection of the collective consciousness trauma and fear. I saw the top hat man in my early twenties, and I was going through quite a lot at the time,” suggested one user.
“I saw a shadow man with the top hat in a dream once. I was following him down a hallway to the outside. I was calling him Nathan (I don’t know anyone by that name), but I recognized him in my dream. A couple of days later (while awake), I opened up this spirit communication app I have, and the first word that it said after only a few seconds was Nathan,” wrote another.
“Hey, so does he play the piano? Because I had a shadow top hat man playing the unplugged keyboard in my room before!!” exclaimed a third.
