Starting school is a major milestone for every child. It can be incredibly overwhelming, especially for children who are still learning English.

Everything from making friends to understanding classroom routines can feel unfamiliar. When a child is unable to fully communicate with classmates or teachers, it’s easy to feel isolated or left out.

However, small acts of kindness make a world of difference. A patient teacher and a welcoming classmate will help a struggling child feel seen and included as they adjust to their new environment.

TikToker @theclassyclinician is a school social worker, and she recorded herself comforting a new student who didn’t speak any English.

Fortunately, she also had help bridging the language gap from a bilingual student who served as a translator for the new student.

The student was new to the United States and only spoke Spanish. In her home country, school was optional at her age, so she wasn’t used to the school setting.

Through the student translator, @theclassyclinician learned that the Spanish-speaking little girl missed her mother and didn’t want to go to class. She also wanted to stay with @theclassyclinician because being with her made her feel safe.

Together, the student translator and social worker collaborated to validate the new student’s feelings of anxiety and gently encourage her to get through the school day. They acknowledged that it was okay to feel scared and emphasized how brave she was being.

In the end, @theclassyclinician rewarded her translator with fruit snacks as a small gesture of thanks for her help. The interaction showed that empathy knows no age limit.

Although the translator was just a child herself, she patiently helped communicate not only the student’s words but also the emotions behind them, making the frightened newcomer feel understood during a vulnerable time.

The heartwarming video resonated with thousands of people.

Many TikTok users praised the student interpreter for her compassion and empathy and shared their own experiences of helping classmates overcome language barriers or recalled the kindness they received when they were new to the country.

“I remember translating for a little girl who came from Mexico. Spoke no English. I helped translate, and 23 years later, she’s still my best friend, and now our babies are like siblings,” commented one user.

“Little miss translator is not only translating words, but she is doing it with love and compassion,” stated another.

“Shoutout to our little translator. This is so sweet. And shoutout to you for creating a comforting and safe environment during this difficult time,” wrote a third.

“As a child immigrant, thank you. I wish more teachers were like this. Thankfully, I also had two kids who spoke my language to get me through the days!” exclaimed someone else.
