Now that enough time has passed since this incident, TikToker Syd (@mrs.schuberts) feels ready to share all about it. So, she was texting a guy, and he asked her if she wanted to hang out. She told him that he lived too far away.
About 30 minutes later, she received a phone call. When she answered it, someone spoke using a mechanism to distort their voice. They informed her that the guy she was just talking to had been in an accident and wasn’t going to make it.
Syd advised the caller to let someone else know about the situation because she was not his emergency contact. Then, she promptly hung up.
Soon, she received another call, and it was from the guy who was supposed to be dying in the accident. He revealed that there had been no accident, and he had just wanted to see if Syd really cared about him.
“That’s a wild scam to run,” said Syd. “That was a wild, weird plot. What do you mean? I was like, yeah, I don’t know you. And like, don’t do that on anyone else.”
“Have you done this, and has it ever worked? Who has this worked for? Like, someone who has trauma or PTSD over a car accident? This is weird behavior.”
Rather than apologizing, he attempted to justify what he had done. He told her that she just didn’t get it, and that some people loved hard. Syd never talked to him again. All in all, faking your death is a strange and ineffective way to get someone to like you.
In the comments section, several TikTok users shared equally unbelievable dating experiences.
“I hung out with this girl a few times, and the last time we hung out, she tried to get me to call this guy she went on a date with and tell him something like, ‘There was an accident, and I found this phone; do you know whose phone this is? She’s hurt and can’t talk,'” commented one user.
“Omg, one time, I was texting this guy, and he didn’t respond until late, and I got the same thing like, ‘Oh, he got in a wreck blah blah.’ Anyway, I guess he actually had and invited me to visit him in the hospital/needed me to bring something, and I show up, and his wife was already there because they called her first, and it was so awkward. She didn’t ask me any questions, but I know she freaked out on him after,” wrote another.
“Manipulator. Keep in mind, he did this to someone he didn’t know. Imagine what he’d do if you were in a relationship with him or married,” added a third.
