Meeting someone through mutual friends makes it feel more likely that a person is exactly who they say they are. After all, it’s much harder to successfully hide a major secret when your social circles overlap. But some people are just incredibly skilled at compartmentalizing different parts of their lives.
One woman missed the warning signs in her relationship and found out her boyfriend had an entire family that he was keeping from her. When TikToker Ash (@ash.08.88) was 26 years old, she met her now ex-boyfriend at a local bar.
They were introduced to each other by some mutual friends. They exchanged phone numbers, and from there, they started texting back and forth. They went on a date after two weeks of talking.
Everything was going well until they were about six or seven months into dating. Something seemed off, and she didn’t see him very often because he was always working.
“Someone who was already kind of suspicious of him started doing a little digging and suggested that he might be married with a kid,” said Ash.
“I didn’t believe it, so I confronted him about it, and he claimed that it wasn’t his kid, he was not married, and that was his cousin who passed away’s kid.”
Apparently, he stepped in to help take care of his cousin’s kid, but he didn’t live with him. Ash believed him. But over the course of their four-year relationship, more red flags popped up. She also never met anyone in his family.
She only uncovered his lies after her sister’s friend found Ash’s boyfriend on a dating app. Of course, Ash was extremely upset. She confronted him about it, and he had no choice but to admit to it.
He revealed that he was still married and in the process of a divorce. He also had three kids, and one of them was born while he and Ash were dating. The revelation was devastating.

“The dumb part of me wanted to forgive him and move past everything,” said Ash. “But I told myself I could do better, and I didn’t deserve everything I had just been put through for four years.”
“Not only was he hiding things and keeping an entire family from me, but he was also very controlling, and I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t have social media or do my hair a certain way.”
The moral of the story here is for women to tune in to their instincts. When something consistently feels wrong, there’s often a reason.
Looking back, Ash wishes she would have listened to her gut at the time, but at least she now knows better. She hopes sharing her story will encourage others not to ignore their own intuition.
