But that’s just it. The things that burned were just “things.” We could not replace some items, but my family was irreplaceable.

I was an adult when a house fire consumed my belongings. It was hard not to let it consume my life. Although I can still smell the torched remains of items of my youth, and when I hear fire alarms, sometimes my heart races, I am alive. My family survived.

I cannot imagine being a child going through the same thing and losing my clothes, shoes, and favorite toys.

Losing the home you grew up in, the Christmas tree your family decorated just the other day, would be devastating. Even though this story has a happy ending as everyone survived, there is a lot of healing and rebuilding ahead.
