The word puzzle’s user base expanded rapidly, and, just three months later, the New York Times purchased it on January 31, 2022.
Josh Wardle just had one condition when selling the game– he wanted it to remain free and simply fun, with no ulterior motives of selling or data collection.
“I have long admired the New York Times’ approach to their games and the respect with which they treat their players,” Josh said in a statement on Twitter following the purchase.
“Their values are aligned with mine on these matters, and I am thrilled they will be stewards of the game moving forward.”
Now, the new Wordle board game will be available for purchase by October. Players will be able to compete using four means of gameplay– classic, fast, timed, or teams– and the lower the score a player racks up, the better.
Jonathan Knight, the head of Games at the New York Times, hopes this new iteration will bring even more people together and foster meaningful experiences.
“Wordle truly brought us all together, and that’s what makes it so special. At New York Times games, we are focused on quality crafted puzzles that everyone can experience together, which is why we are so excited to team up with Hasbro to bring a fresh new format to the global sensation,” Knight said.
