She Got A Backup Birthday Cake In Case Her Mother Forgot To Bring One, And When Her Mom Found Out, She Flipped
This thirty-six-year-old woman has, unfortunately, been estranged from her mother for much of her life.
Her mom was very young when she was born, so she was primarily raised by her aunt and grandmother. And since they did not have a lot of money at the time, she remembers always sharing a cake or special dessert with them every birthday.
She has since gotten married, and her thirty-four-year-old husband led a much different life. In fact, she believes his family is straight out of a Hallmark commercial.
And because of his picture-perfect family life, she felt inspired to reach out and get back in touch with her mom.
“She apologized for a lot of things, and I could tell she was really remorseful. And since coming back into my life, she has been great if not a little forgetful,” she explained.
“Like if I ask her to drive me somewhere, she’ll ‘forget’ that she said yes until it’s too late to go. Or if I ask her to bring something to a gathering, she’ll ‘forget’ to bring it.”
Nonetheless, her mom’s forgetfulness had not presented much of an issue until this past week, when it was her son’s birthday.
Since getting more involved in her and her son’s lives, her mother has plunged into full-on “grandma mode”– even though her son has always known her mother-in-law as his “grandma.”
Anyway, while planning the birthday festivities, her mother-in-law and father-in-law offered to bake her son’s birthday cake. And she thought that would be perfect since they are excellent bakers.

However, her mom jumped in and said there would be no need since “grandma” would be baking a cake instead.
She ended up going along with it but still worried that her mom would somehow “forget” again and not bring a cake.
So, two days before the party, she decided to buy a simple cake from her local grocery store just in case.
But, come the day of the party, her mom actually blew her away. Her mom showed up with a stunning cake from an expensive bakery, and she was over the moon.
“I was thrilled and set it up at the center of the table. I put the plain store-bought cake out too, for my son to use as his smash cake,” she recalled.
However, this might not have been the best idea– because as everyone was gathering to sing “happy birthday,” her mom asked her why there was another cake.
She honestly did not think twice and bluntly said that it was just a backup cake. And then, her mom completely freaked out.
“She started crying and yelling about how I am not letting her be a good Grandma and how I won’t forgive her for her past mistakes,” she said.
Then, her mom left early, and the party was understandably a bit awkward for a while. Nonetheless, her in-laws stayed and made sure her son had a great rest of his birthday.
Following the event, though, she did reach out to her sister-in-law to talk through the entire ordeal.
And during that conversation, her sister-in-law said they understood why she got the cake, but it was a bad decision to display it with the rest of the food after seeing her mom did bring a cake.
On top of that, she learned that her mom was expecting an apology from her. And until that happens, her mom will not speak to her.
Regardless, though, she feels like she does not owe an apology to her mom at all and does not have plans to reach out right now.
Still, even though her husband agrees with her, he believes that the true reason why she doesn’t want to apologize is that she is still upset with her mother about her childhood.
In turn, she has been left wondering if her husband is really right and if putting the extra cake out was a jerky thing to do.
Do you think her mom had a right to be offended or not? How would you reconcile this situation?
