The most common lies that come up in the dating world are fibs about height or not being transparent about relationship status. But according to TikToker Erin (@erni1616), she dated a man who constructed such an elaborate web of lies that she still struggles to understand how he managed to keep it going for so long.
While she was dating this guy, he suddenly had multiple heart attacks and was admitted to the hospital. She immediately stepped into the role of a supportive partner. For nine months, she regularly visited him in the hospital.
Each time she saw him, he appeared exactly as someone would expect a long-term hospital patient to look. He was dressed in a hospital gown, wearing a hospital identification bracelet, and seemed to be receiving ongoing medical care. Nothing about the situation struck her as suspicious.
During those nine months of his hospitalization, she also spoke to his parents on the phone, who were very broken up about their son being unwell and in the hospital.
They discussed his health condition and reinforced everything he had already told her.
They also confirmed that his ex-wife was fully out of the picture and had moved away with their child. He was super depressed and heartbroken about not being able to see his kid for months, especially since there was apparently a big custody battle going on.
However, Erin later found out that everything had been fabricated. He never suffered from any heart attacks and was not a patient at the hospital.
What’s more, he was still with his wife, and they even had a new baby on the way. Also, Erin learned that the people she thought were his parents weren’t actually his parents at all. So, she has no idea who they really were.
The story quickly garnered abundant amounts of attention, with many people struggling to grasp how such a complex lie could have been maintained for nearly an entire year.
In the comments section, TikTok users joked about the logistics of it all.
“I’m going to need the nurses to come forward because they must have known the tea!” exclaimed one user.
“The weirdest part is visiting him all the time over nine months in the hospital. Was he a hospital cleaner? A doctor?? A nurse??” commented another.
“How many people were in on this?? I’m honestly almost impressed,” wrote a third.
“How do people have the time and energy to pull off something this elaborate?” added someone else.
For Erin, the deception must have been emotionally devastating. She had believed she was standing by someone during a particularly rough patch in their life, only to discover she had been manipulated from the very beginning. According to the caption of her video, at least she has a great therapist.
