This Dad Footed This Bill For His Daughter’s Wedding But, Since She Canceled It And He Lost All The Down Payments, He No Longer Wants To Pay For Anything Else
This man and his wife have three children– a son who is thirty-six and two daughters who are thirty-two and twenty-five.
And since the beginning, the couple has pledged to give each of the children one of two options when it comes time to start their lives.
They could either get up to ten thousand dollars for their wedding or use that money as a down payment on a house.
“Both of our oldest kids picked the down payment option. They got married and had medium-sized weddings– both under one hundred guests,” he recalled.
“They paid for the majority of the weddings themselves, but we did pitch in maybe one to two thousand dollars each to help a bit.”
Last year, though, his youngest daughter finally got engaged and planned to have her wedding this October.
She also opted for her parents to help pay for the wedding instead of taking a house down payment because she and her fiancé felt very comfortable with apartment living.
So, he and his wife put deposits down for a venue, caterer, photographer, and DJ. All in all, the deposits totaled over five thousand dollars and were non-refundable.
But, just two months ago, his daughter called him up and said she decided to cancel the wedding out of the blue.

Apparently, wedding planning had become too stressful for her, so she and her fiancé decided to just have a courthouse wedding.
Moreover, they wanted to take the remaining five thousand dollars from him and his wife to fund an extra long honeymoon, where she planned to travel to multiple destinations over two to three months.
He was understandably taken aback, though, and told his daughter hell no.
“I told her we would not be contributing money to that,” he said.
“I explained that by canceling the wedding, we have lost out on thousands of dollars and gotten nothing out of it due to non-refundable deposits.”
His daughter freaked out about this, though, and later accused him of playing favoritism with her older siblings.
She also believes he is punishing her for wanting to do something different marriage-wise.
“But I told her that the situations are not the same and that giving her thousands of dollars for her to bum around Europe and Asia for a few months was never something I agreed to,” he explained.
“I understand wedding planning is stressful, and if they want a courthouse wedding, that is their choice. But, it also wasn’t their money that was lost by canceling the wedding; it was ours.”
Regardless, though, his wife strongly disagrees with him.
His wife wants to give their daughter the money in order to keep the family peace.
Nonetheless, he is not sure if refusing to give his daughter the money would truly be a jerky thing to do– because, at the end of the day, he just does not want to absolve his daughter of her actions that cost him a ton of money.
