He Told His Stepfather He Could Eat Anything He Wanted Since He Pays For The Groceries, But Then His Mom Accused Him Of Financial Abuse
This twenty-year-old man’s parents are separated, and since his father is currently working out of the country, he has been living with his mother full-time.
His mom has since remarried, and his stepfather brought two daughters– who are twelve and fourteen– with them from a previous marriage. He also has a half-brother who is six.
In turn, his mother’s house is pretty packed. And unfortunately, money has been quite tight.
“My mom’s husband is unemployed because he was abruptly terminated. And both of them do gigs here and there while he looks for a job, but they barely bring money to the house,” he explained.
At the same time, he is just twenty and works while also being a second-year college student. He has also paid for most of his clothing, hobbies, and some bills ever since he was sixteen. Then, once he turned eighteen, he paid rent and for his car.
So anyway, since his stepfather and stepsiblings are big eaters, he decided to start buying some of his own groceries to keep in the house. And everyone knew that they were just for his consumption.
But, about four months ago, his mom started trying to take advantage of his more steady income out of nowhere.
More specifically, she began asking him to buy things for the house as well as groceries– and the requests just kept piling up.
“So, I am basically paying for all of the food, plus rent, plus driving my stepsister to and from school, among other things,” he vented.

And constantly having to support the household has been really getting on his nerves. However, when they were having a family dinner this week, one more incident totally pushed him over the edge.
While eating, he recalled how he had bought a watermelon for himself and wanted to have some. But then, he discovered that nearly the entire watermelon was gone.
Still, he tried to stay positive and focus on how he could just enjoy the last part of the fruit.
And that’s when his stepsister stepped in and said she wanted some watermelon, too. At first, he told her that she could just have an apple since there was barely any left.
However, his stepfather apparently overheard and decided to butt in, too.
“My mom’s husband said kids go first, but I said that the kids have been eating watermelon for the past few days and that it was my turn,” he said.
“Then, my stepfather looked me dead in the eye and said, ‘Put it back, son. You can eat something else.'”
That comment utterly infuriated him. So, he decided to finally speak his mind and tell his stepfather that since he paid for all the groceries, he would be eating whatever he wanted.
The air in the room immediately turned a bit tense, but nobody in his family said anything after that. Then, he just took the watermelon to his room.
Later that night, though, his mom went to talk to him about the entire ordeal. First, she did apologize for how her husband had treated him.
But then, his mom kind of berated him for being rude and bringing up the grocery bills at all.
On top of that, he even got accused of being financially abusive toward his family.
So now, he is really confused. He thought that he had been helping out his family and just wanted some personal purchases to be respected.
Nonetheless, ever since his mom accused him of holding his contributions over his family’s head, he is not sure if standing up for his groceries was the wrong thing to do.
Is anyone being financially abusive here, and if so, who? Do you think he had a right to say something to his stepfather? What would you have done in this situation?
