Everyone has heard of stay-at-home moms. But let’s be real: while this title often sounds pretty attractive to parents who are forced to work, these moms still have a different and arguably more challenging kind of full-time job.

Most of the time, these women are still responsible for keeping tiny tots alive and happy on top of running a household– which is no task to scoff at.

Recently, though, a similar title– but without the kid part– has been circulating social media and receiving a lot of hate. I’m talking about the women who call themselves “stay-at-home girlfriends” (SAHG).

The #StayAtHomeGirlfriend currently has just under one hundred and thirty-five million views on TikTok. And if you are wondering what this “job” entails, it is not much.

Apparently, these self-proclaimed SAHGs are primarily women who do not need to work since their partner is able to support them financially. So, their day-to-day mostly consists of waking up without a blaring alarm clock, frequenting yoga or SoulCycle, and running errands. Or, some days, they just get to stay home.

Now, I know what you might be thinking: “This sounds like a dream; how do I sign up?”

Well, the obvious first step would be to secure a romantic partner who is able to singlehandedly support your household and all of the personal expenses you rack up each month.

Despite this not being realistic for most people, though, the stay-at-home-girlfriend trend has primarily received pushback over more emotional concerns as opposed to financial ones.

First of all, many of these SAHGs tend to revolve their entire day-to-day life around their partner’s existence– a fact that many TikTok users have noticed and think is just plain sad.

For instance, one twenty-five-year-old woman named Kendel Kay recently shared her morning routine as a SAHG on TikTok, and viewers were appalled by how many tasks Kendel completed were for or because of her boyfriend, Luke.

She starts her morning by filling up Luke’s water bottle to keep her boyfriend hydrated, then she makes Luke an iced latte before cleaning up their shared bedroom.

Next, Kendel completes her skincare routine and writes in her planner before going to get more coffee with, you guessed it, Luke. And finally, after going to the gym to work out with Luke, Kendel made her and her boyfriend a smoothie bowl.

This video alone gained a whopping twelve million views, roped in over five hundred and seventy-four thousand likes, and spurred over eighteen thousand comments. And most of the responses pointed out how Kendel did little for or by herself.

“This is actually kind of sad,” commented one user.

“As someone who had to stay at home, I feel so sad. I hope you’ll find something more fulfilling because this looks isolating,” commented another user.

“I lived like this for two months and never felt more worthless, bored, lonely, and purposeless. Kudos to those who can enjoy it, though,” wrote a third.

Still, Kendel’s video is just one small example of this trend taking over the internet. And the recent fad has even inspired many TikTok creators to post satirical spoof videos pretending to be a stay-at-home-girlfriend.

One TikToker named Haley recently hopped on this SAHG spoof movement and created a hilarious yet sadly accurate video of her own.

“Welcome to a day in my life as a stay-at-home billionaire’s girlfriend,” Haley began her video.

“I wake up every morning, let some light into the room, and put on a dress. William loves dresses. Then it’s time for my skincare. William has made it clear I started to age, so I roll my skin with every stone I can possibly buy,” she continued.

Then, Haley showed herself getting a doctor’s note to remove her wrist cast– something that her fictional boyfriend “William,” did not like– and laying under red LED lights because, apparently, William said he would leave for a younger woman if she didn’t.

Haley also completed a ton of household chores while still donning her black gown, practicing her facial expressions in the mirror to look pretty, and doing some more LED light therapy.

Now obviously, Haley’s TikTok is a major over-exaggeration and meant to be a commentary on all of the real stay-at-home-girlfriend videos. Still, the TikTok community thought it was on point.

“Funny because it’s true,” commented one user.

“This TikTok and these comments have me dead. This is my favorite kind of humor,” added another user.

So, whether or not you think being a stay-at-home-girlfriend would be a dream job or the bane of your existence, at least all of the SAHG content is keeping TikTok feeds across the country interesting.
