Her Stepdaughter Asked Her To Come Visit Her For A Week And Help Her Plan Her Wedding, But She Said She Can’t, As She Has To Stay Home With Her Parrot

This woman has a few stepchildren that her husband had from a previous relationship, and when she entered their lives, they were all on the older side.
Her stepdaughter back then was 16, and when she did get married to her husband, her daughter had already moved out to go to college.
Despite her stepdaughter not living at home, she developed a good relationship with her. Now, her stepdaughter will be getting married in 2 months, and she’s really freaking out about the wedding planning process.
Her stepdaughter is having an enormous and very traditional wedding. Her stepdaughter lives in a different state than she and her husband do, and her stepdaughter just asked if she could come to spend a week with her and help with wedding planning as well as babysitting her 2-year-old.
She let her stepdaughter know that she would not be able to make it, and when her stepdaughter pressed her as to why she was saying now, she said she had to stay home with her parrot.
As you can imagine, that reply did not go over well with her stepdaughter at all, and her stepdaughter couldn’t believe her parrot was more important.
Now, she rescued her parrot, which is a Macaw, and her bird is lovely but has a ton of problems because she came from an abusive place.
“I’ve had her for 3 years and since then haven’t taken any vacations or trips away as it would be too disruptive for her,” she explained.
“She distrusts everyone and is very reliant on her routine. I love her deeply, and I’m happy to make sacrifices for her. They are permanent toddlers and very intelligent birds.”

After she told her stepdaughter why she couldn’t drop everything and visit, her stepdaughter turned around and started a problem with her husband.
Her stepdaughter went on about how she always wanted a mom of her own (her biological mom is not in the picture), and her stepdaughter accused her of never welcoming her because she’s not her own biological daughter.
Her stepdaughter also caused a ruckus about how she was being shoved to the back burner because of the bird, and she felt that was the worst insult possible.
Her stepdaughter kept going, saying she has no heart and is pretty much a terrible person.
“I feel really hurt, and I can tell he agrees with her even though he’s refusing to take sides,” she said.
“But I don’t see why I should be expected to take holiday time off work to babysit and “bond” all of a sudden, and I don’t see how I’m a monster for this…”
After contemplating things further, she decided to call her stepdaughter to see if they could smooth things over.
She admitted that she’s a “crazy bird lady” who really does love staying at home, and she offered to help her stepdaughter plan her wedding over video calls.
She then brought up a touchy subject; the fact that her stepdaughter has previously brushed off her attempts to really connect with her.
“We talked a bit, and I asked her why she hadn’t accepted me reaching out in the past, and she apologized and said she didn’t want to accept someone as a stand-in, “fake” replacement for her bio mom, but now she regrets it and would like a closer relationship, especially seeing how close her SO is with his mom,” she continued.
“We ended the conversation positively, and I’m hoping things can improve going forward. I told her I’m a crazy bird lady and asked her if she still wants a relationship knowing that, and she said that after the wedding, she’s willing to travel to visit us if we have room… which we do.”
So thankfully, she was able to smooth things over in the end, but she’s still left wondering if she’s a jerk for prioritizing her parrot over her stepdaughter.
