Valentine’s Day is racing around the corner, and regardless of whether you are single or taken, you will probably end the evening just like most people throughout the country– watching a good old-fashioned rom-com.

What’s better than cuddling up on the couch with your partner (or a glass of wine), throwing on a fuzzy blanket, and watching a cheesy romance flick? Arguably nothing.

But, with so many streaming options to choose from, you might be struggling to make a movie decision.

Let’s face it, though– you don’t want to get stuck endlessly scrolling on Netflix or Hulu on the night of, searching high and low for the right film while the minutes tick away. After all, Valentine’s Day is on a Tuesday, so it’s not like we have endless time (cue the following morning work blues).

That’s why we compiled a list of our top five Valentine’s Day movie picks– both new and old (or shall I say “classic”). With these finds locked and loaded, you can fast forward straight to watching, snacking, and relaxing.

“Your Place or Mine” – Available On Netflix

First of all, can we address the fact that Netflix decided to release a movie with two rom-com icons just four days before V-day? Thank you, execs.

On February 10, “Your Place or Mine” was released on the streaming platform. Starring Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher (swoon), the film follows two best friends–named Debbie and Peter– as they lead completely different lifestyles but still manage to come back together following an evening spent together two decades earlier.

So, if you were hopeful that a brand-new rom-com would fall into your lap right in time for Valentine’s Day, it just did. You can now stream “Your Place or Mine” on Netflix.

“Someone Great” – Available On Netlfix

Okay, Valentine’s Day is not always a love-filled, joyous affair for everyone. Instead, you might be fresh out of a breakup and looking forward to getting some much-needed crying and ice cream eating on your schedule.

If you can relate, then “Someone Great” is the perfect flick for you to watch alone or with some of your closest girlfriends. The movie, which was released in 2019, follows the protagonist, Jenny, as she navigates a breakup with the love of her life.

Jenny calls on two of her best friends, Blair and Erin, to provide some much-needed moral support and help her move on.

This tale is simultaneously heart-touching and heartbreaking– teaching the tough lesson that even though you might love someone, things do not always go how you planned. So, grab some tissues and prepare to shed tears if you opt to watch this flick on V-Day.

“The Proposal” – Available On Hulu

Who doesn’t love Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds? In this star-packed film, Bullock portrays a cut-throat businesswoman named Margaret who realizes she is going to be deported to Canada.

So, in an effort to remain in the States, Margaret is forced to propose to her assistant Andrew– played by Ryan Reynolds– in order to obtain citizenship.

A ton of drama ultimately ensues, though, once the “couple” is forced to meet the in-laws and try to convince their families that they are truly in love.

The movie is downright hilarious and features a bunch of other comedic icons, such as Betty White and Oscar Nuñez.

So, if you are hoping to have a good laugh on V-day, definitely stream this rom-com.

“He’s Just Not That Into You” – Available On Hulu

This 2009 classic likely needs no introduction and features an impressive roster of stars– including Scarlett Johansson, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck, Drew Barrymore, and Justin Long. The movie is set in Baltimore and follows friends and lovers who are all in their twenties and thirties as they attempt to navigate the trials and tribulations of modern relationships.

The over-arching storylines tackle themes such as commitment issues, the “waiting game,” trust issues, and defying the status quo. Aside from its serious nuance, though, the rom-com is also quite hilarious.

“Valentine’s Day” – Available On HBO Max

The name probably speaks for itself, but this 2010 fan-favorite is perfect for the month of February.

Yet again, the rom-com touts an impressive cast list– starring Anne Hathaway, Julia Roberts, Jamie Foxx, Taylor Lautner, Jessica Alba, Emma Roberts, Eric Dane, Jennifer Garner, Taylor Swift, Ashton Kutcher, and, my favorite, Patrick Dempsey. Similar to “He’s Just Not That Into You,” this flick follows the interconnected stories of numerous Los Angeles couples as they navigate love on the most love-filled day of the year– Valentine’s Day.

Viewers get to watch as teenage crushes, first dates, and connections with old flames unfold all at the same time. In doing so, the movie shows that love can spark in countless different perfectly un-perfect ways.
