“My family still believes they’ve done nothing wrong, and whenever it’s brought up they say “it builds character “ in a sarcastic tone.”
Last month, her mom celebrated her birthday, and they had an enormous dinner with all of her family members present.
While at her mom’s party, some of her family members made a couple of compliments directed at her, but then her mom commented that her sister was “more naturally pretty” than she was.
She honestly couldn’t take it anymore and had a complete breakdown right there in the middle of the party. She sobbed, and she even said a couple of things she really didn’t mean to say in the heat of the moment. Her mom then ended up crying, and all the rest of their family members looked on in complete shock and alarm.
“I left straight after and haven’t returned calls from my parents since,” she said. “My sister said I did what I needed to do to heal and is being surprisingly supportive, but my mom’s brother sent me a long paragraph about how I need to grow up and can’t just throw tantrums when something upsets me.”
She’s left wondering if it was wrong of her to melt down at her mom’s birthday party. What do you think?
