This 17-year-old girl is about to be a senior in high school, which is why she has been preparing to apply to colleges in just a few months.

She has also already selected various schools to which she wants to submit applications– the majority of which are state schools– and has even gotten organized with a comprehensive spreadsheet.

Apparently, she created a spreadsheet that contains information about all of her prospective schools, including tuition expenses and the cost of living for students at each institution.

“I also have functions on the sheet that show how well I would be able to afford it using my college savings account that my parents have, as well as my own general savings,” she explained.

About a year and a half ago, though, her 40-year-old mother and 41-year-old father welcomed her new baby brother into the world.

And she recently learned that she would actually be getting less money for college due to her younger sibling.

It all began earlier this week when she approached her mom to talk about college and pulled up her spreadsheet.

At that point, her mom claimed she needed to adjust her spreadsheet functions to account for only half of her college savings account– since, apparently, her parents planned to give their new son the other half of her college fund.

Now, she was quite shocked after her mom said that– especially because her parents will have over 16 years to save up for her brother’s college fund.

Plus, it’s not guaranteed that he will even choose to pursue higher education.

She also tried running the numbers using half of her college savings account. And afterward, she revealed how her financial outlook was not great.

“I want to graduate with as little debt as possible, and taking away half is pretty damaging to that,” she said.

So, she did try to talk to both of her parents about the situation, but neither of them was willing to budge.

Instead, her dad just claimed that since it was his and her mom’s money, only they got to decide how it was spent, and she was not entitled to it.

Her parents also pointed out how they were hoping to retire early. That way, they could spend more time with her little brother.

But if her parents were forced to fund an entirely new college fund, that would push back their retirement plan.

On top of the whole retirement explanation, her dad also tried to claim that she should be saving more money instead of wasting it.

Apparently, she had bought herself a Nintendo Switch with her paycheck last month, which he was not happy about.

However, she claimed that she usually deposits most of her paycheck into her savings account. And while her dad called her a “smart girl” and promised to help her figure out her college finances, she still doesn’t think the situation is right.

“I still don’t think it’s fair to lose a good amount of my college funding 15 months away from starting to someone who won’t use it for over 15 years,” she vented.

So, she’s now been left wondering whether not wanting to share her college fund with her little brother is justified or if she’s being unreasonable.

Can you understand her parents’ desire to retire early? At the same time, is it her problem that they had another child? Should she have to pay for their decision with her college fund? How can she handle this?
