When we’re stuck in a rut or enter a low period of our lives, many of us struggle to realize that we have been self-sabotaging.

While yes, certain people and other external factors can hold us back and prevent us from living our best lives, a lot of the time, we do it to ourselves.

Here’s the thing about self-sabotage – it happens a lot, and you’re not alone if you do it. We can be guilty of self-sabotage in big and small ways. Plus, once you’ve started sabotaging yourself and holding yourself back, it can be hard to break the habit.

So, here are some tips on how to stop self-sabotaging to allow yourself to blossom into the person you’ve always wanted to be.

Maintain balance in your life

If you’ve found yourself working really hard, doing absolutely everything you can to excel in your career and personal life, and not seeing much in the way of results, it could be because you’re overdoing it.

Those who struggle with moderation and maintaining a balance in their life aren’t doing themselves any favors. While going to the gym in the wee hours of the morning and staying up all night to work on a project may seem like impressive dedication, that kind of behavior can be damaging and hold you back rather than push you forward. You have to take care of yourself to grow.

Stop procrastinating

Everyone procrastinates in their lives. It’s human nature. Haven’t you waited too long to start a project or kept “forgetting” to send out an email because you occupied yourself with other things until the day was over?

When we let procrastination get the best of us, we ruin our chances of succeeding in life. It can also be a sign that you’re procrastinating because taking initiative and getting a certain thing done because you’re anxious about it. Snap out of it, address what’s holding you back, and find ways to accomplish what you need.

Let go of being a perfectionist

Waiting to finish something or go somewhere until all your plans and the timing are ‘perfect’ is a form of self-sabotage.

Being a perfectionist is something a lot of people struggle with, but it’s something you’re going to have to let go of.

Don’t let obsession or fear surrounding little details stop you from missing opportunities. Drop that all-or-nothing way of thinking and accept that nothing can be perfect and bumps in the road are unavoidable.

Write out your plans

I’ve found that one of the ways I self-sabotage is by failing to remind myself how badly I want something. I get so occupied with other things going on in my life that I sometimes lose sight of my goals and, therefore, lose sight of my motivation.

To take action and stay motivated, write out your future plans and goals. Break down the things you need to do to achieve them and write those down as well.

Then, take action. Remember that growing in your career or personal life takes time and is an incremental process.

Again, self-sabotage is normal, and most of us experience it at some point in our lives. Remember to not let it get the best of you and that you don’t have to go through the rest of your life with self-sabotaging habits. You’ve got this!
