People who work from home often say that one of the best parts of having a remote position is being able to lounge around in your pajamas and sweats all day. There’s also the beauty of not worrying about what you’ll wear in the morning.

However, more remote positions, especially corporate ones, require online video meetings and occasional in-person appearances at an office or an event. Plus, after working from home for a while, you may begin to miss how accomplished you felt when you put together a nice workday ensemble.

Even if you work from home and don’t have to go into an office daily, having a work-from-home capsule wardrobe is a good idea. If you don’t know what a capsule wardrobe is, it’s a collection of clothes that can be paired in various combinations.

It may feel silly to have a work-from-home wardrobe, but if you want to look a bit nicer for your video conferences, you should have one!

Here are a few pieces that you can use to build a work-from-home capsule wardrobe that will have you looking put together while still feeling comfortable.

Tops

I know how tempting it is to lay around in a sweatshirt or even the shirt you wore to bed while you work from home all day. However, there are ways to stay comfortable while wearing something more presentable.

After all, your top half is most visible in online meetings. The key is to have some nice sweaters in your wardrobe. A turtleneck sweater, an off-sleeve sweater, and a v-neck sweater are great to have.

You should also have at least one neutral blouse, like a tie-neck or collar blouse, for the fancier meetings or occasional in-person events. Then, it would help if you also had a good quality, clean, and crisp white tee shirt on hand for the days you don’t have meetings scheduled but may have some scheduled last minute.

Bottoms

Just because you want to look a little more presentable while working remotely doesn’t mean you have to wear tight-fitting, uncomfortable, super formal pants. There are ways to dress up pants that are easier to relax in. I would ensure you have a nice pair of wide-leg trousers in a neutral color for more formal occasions, a solid pair of black leggings, and some nice, neutral-colored joggers.

Jackets and Outer-layers

You don’t have to sit around in a blazer all day while waiting to join one of your online meetings. However, it’s a good idea to have one on hand. Another great layer to add is a long cardigan, which you can pop over that white tee shirt or any more casual shirt to make yourself look more put together.

Shoes and Jewelry

You shouldn’t have to worry too much about the shoes you wear when working from home. Honestly, you should be able to get through the day in a pair of fuzzy socks or comfortable slippers. However, having a nicer pair of loafers, you can slip into in case you need to go somewhere for work at the last minute is not a bad idea.

The same goes for jewelry – you shouldn’t stress about it. A simple pair of studs, tiny hoop earrings in silver or gold, and a simple necklace should suffice.

When you’re working comfortably on your couch and don’t have any meetings scheduled, you can wear the leggings. If you have a few short meetings throughout the day, wear a nicer top with your joggers, and then if you do need to meet up with someone from work or give a presentation standing up, you have the more professional, formal pieces you need like the wide leg pants and blazer.

Not only will this capsule wardrobe keep you prepared for all kinds of remote work situations, but you’ll feel more confident throughout the day as you get out of your sweats and look more professional.
