Last Seen In 1937, De Winton’s Golden Mole Was Rediscovered By Scientists At A South Africa Beach After It Was Thought To Be Extinct

Now, the technique’s success has opened up a new avenue for identifying other lost or endangered species.

De Winton’s golden mole is one out of 25 species listed in the Search for Lost Species project. The project was launched in 2017 by several conservation organizations with the aim of looking for animal, plant, and fungi species that haven’t been spotted for 10 years but are not officially classified as extinct.

So far, 11 out of the 25 species have been found. Aside from the golden mole, the project has led to the rediscovery of the largest bee on the planet, a miniature fanged deer, and the velvet pitcher plant, which had been lost for over a century.
