She’s Furious With Her In-Laws For Announcing That They Will Be Staying In Her Vacation Home For Six Months While They Find A New Place To Live

If you have a vacation home in addition to your daily home, you likely worked very hard to get it. People who own vacation homes often use them to escape from all that hard work and see them as a sacred sanctuary. How would you feel if someone glommed onto that sanctuary without your permission?
One woman is furious after her in-laws suddenly announced they were selling their house and would stay in her vacation home for six months while they find a new place.
She and her husband are in their 30s and have been married for five years. They own a beautiful vacation home on the beach that they built themselves. They frequent their vacation home year-round, and it’s very sacred to them.
Her husband’s parents are in their 60s and stay with them at their vacation home from time to time for week-long stays.
Because they’re always welcomed guests, they contribute some money towards the house’s maintenance, but that’s about it.
“Last month, my in-laws suddenly announced they were selling their house to ‘downsize’ and move into a tiny condo,” she said.
“They’ve been secretly harboring this idea for months, never mentioning it to me or my husband. They plan to close on the sale in two weeks and then move into our vacation home for six months while they ‘figure things out.'”
She was “floored” by this news and couldn’t believe her in-laws would think it was okay to move into her vacation home without asking first.
Although her in-laws told her and her husband they’d pay them a much more significant amount of money for the house than they have been, she still thinks it was wrong of them to make the decision without her and her husband’s input.

“This house is our sanctuary, not a retirement home extension,” she explained.
“We use it frequently, have friends and family booked to visit throughout the year and rely on the income it generates during peak season.”
“My in-laws, on the other hand, haven’t lifted a finger on the property themselves and contributed only minimally.”
Her husband is trying to mediate the situation, thinking they can make something work between the four of them.
Once her in-laws figured out she was against the idea, they started guilt-tripping her, telling her they’d have nowhere else to go once they moved.
While she doesn’t want to leave her in-laws homeless, she can’t see herself grinning and bearing the situation as her in-laws affect her and her husband’s life socially and financially.
What would you do if you were in her shoes?
