Are you someone who likes to sign the end of a love note or sweet text with an ‘XO?’ Valentine’s Day is when we’re often reminded of the ‘hugs and kisses’ symbol, seeing it printed all over festive cards, shirts, and candy. As you may know, the X is supposed to represent kisses, and the O represents hugs.

It makes one wonder, where did ‘XOXO’ come from? Who decided that it meant ‘hugs and kisses?’

Unfortunately, it’s hard to pinpoint the sole person who first used ‘XOXO’ as a way to represent hugs and kisses.

Historians have several theories about where the symbols originated and how they translated into hugs and kisses.

Surprisingly, some historians have noted that it dates back to medieval times. During a time when few people knew how to read and write, they would often sign important letters or documents with an ‘X,’ as it was a symbol that was reminiscent of a cross and represented goodwill, sincerity, and faith.

After singing these documents with an ‘X,’ the sender would then kiss the X to sort of ‘seal the deal’ and display their sincerity. Interestingly, there is much more history surrounding the use of ‘X’ for kisses than ‘O’ for hugs.

Some historians believe the ‘O’ portion of ‘XOXO’ came much later. The shape of an ‘O’ may remind people of the outstretched or embracing arms of a hug, which could be why people naturally started writing ‘Xs’ and ‘Os’ together.

Other researchers believe the ‘O’ could be related to when Jewish immigrants would arrive in America and use an ‘O’ instead of a signature if they did not know how to read or write, as the symbol had no religious affiliation.

People could estimate that using ‘XOXO’ as a sign of affection really took off in the 1960s, as there are lots of documents and letters where ‘XOXO’ is included in the signatures as a way of expressing love.

Since then, ‘XOXO’ has become a huge part of the way people casually express their love and affection to each other.

After all, it can be very sweet and reassuring to see that someone left an ‘XO’ at the end of a message to you. It’s a small and low-key way to let someone know you care about them.

Do you remember when you were taught what ‘XOXO’ means?
