This 23-year-old woman and her husband, 25, went to the same college and graduated with Bachelor’s degrees. They started dating in middle school, when she was 12 and he was 14, and they’ve been together for 11 years. Throughout their relationship, they’ve had numerous fights and money has been something they’ve disagreed on the most lately.

She works full-time in the medical field, and her job mandates many on-call shifts. Meanwhile, her husband works full-time at an animal care facility and often works overtime each week. She earns $28 per hour during her regular shifts, $17 an hour when she’s on-call standby, and $42 an hour when she’s called in. Her pay is much higher than her husband’s, who earns $14 per hour.

“He is paid a set paycheck every week, even with overtime (his overtime gets put in a bank like PTO and can be used for days off),” she said.

Since she makes so much more than her husband, she pays most of their monthly expenses, which is fine because her husband is about to start online classes to study a field that he’d be more passionate about than what he studied during his undergrad. In her view, it’s important for people to feel passion and fulfillment in their field because people spend so much time working, so it’s more bearable when people like their jobs.

Yesterday morning, she woke up with an upset stomach and called in sick to work. She thought this was for the best because she works with people who are ill, so she didn’t want to go to work when she was feeling sick.

“He woke up and realized I called in and got irritated because ‘I’m always complaining about our lack of money, and if I went to work and didn’t call in, I would have more money,'” she explained.

She was furious with her husband’s reaction, and expressed that she could call in sick from work if she needed to because she made enough money on her end. When her husband questioned what she meant, she explained that her job was a stable career while his job was a position usually held by high school students. This infuriated him, and he said her money wasn’t more significant than his.

“I told him I agreed, but he didn’t need to attack me just because I took a sick day, which I never do,” she shared.

According to her husband, since he works more days a week than she does (she works four days a week, but more when she’s on call, and he works six days per week), he does more work total than she does. He then added that she should be the one to start working more so that they can earn more income.

In her view, this was insane, and she expressed this to her husband, pointing out that her money goes toward most of their monthly expenses. She said that if they needed to increase their household income, he could work more hours or use his time off to drive for Uber. These suggestions made sense to her since her husband earned less money than she did.

Her husband argued that when she’s on call, it’s not the same thing as working an actual shift, so she could be productive and earn money in other ways while on call or on her days off work. His argument infuriated even more, and she said that it wouldn’t be necessary for either of them to have side hustles if he found a different position that earned him a higher income.

After the fight, her husband called her a jerk for talking poorly about his job and gloating about how much more money she earns than he does. He said he’s doing his best to improve his life by taking online classes to eventually work in a new field. Now, she feels guilty.

What advice would you give her?
