After a guy told her what he did for a living, TikToker Kelly (@kellyohgee) decided to stop seeing him because he didn’t seem to value commitment and was likely to take advantage of her.

For their first date, he picked her up in a sleek black luxury car. She was interested to know what he did for work. He explained that he worked for startups. He had been at his current company for two years.

Then, he revealed that he had a financial strategy when it came to startups. He would stay during a company’s early stages because he was always offered really good compensation packages.

They paid him over six figures and gave him shares to invest in.

The shares usually took two years to become available for investment. So, after two years, he would cash in the shares, leave, and move on to the next company. He repeated this process over and over again.

Kelly didn’t know what to make of this. Over time, he started feeding her a lot of sweet nothings. For example, he made a big show of telling her how grateful he was to have her in his life, even though they had only been on two dates so far. It made her increasingly uneasy.

“Things like that would start to itch my brain a little bit, and I just kept thinking about the fact that he would just go to startups, and he would cash out, and he would move on to the next one,” said Kelly.

“Because of this, I just stopped talking to him…if you are able to view commitment, even to your own organization as taking advantage of what they’re giving you, and then cash out and leave, you will do the same thing with our relationship.”

Her perspective sparked a lively debate in the comments section.

Many TikTok users argued that the comparison between business and personal relationships wasn’t necessarily fair, especially in the current job market.

“Loyalty to a corporation is not the same as loyalty in personal relationships. I say this as someone who was once loyal to an organization and learned a lot,” commented one user.

“As someone who works in tech and seeing all these layoffs? Going to have to disagree. A company will take your soul if you let them. I will agree with him ‘being grateful’ to have you in his life was sweet, but very quick. Empty words turn me off,” wrote another.

“I don’t know about this, sis. Work is only a means to an end. The ultimate goal for work is to earn a living; therefore, it does not deserve the same loyalty as family and loved ones,” added a third.
